be. What it is, though, is some very
danceable (jitter-bug, maybe?) driv-
in', mainstream rock n' roll, you hear
me? Not quite as symphonic as some
of their previous stuff, but after one
listen you'll be hooked by the hooks
and agree with a 9 out of 10 for ELO.
Cuba-Gibson Brothers-Island IS
8832
That the label is a description of
the title is purely coincidental. But
the music is salsa disco at its very
best . It's all about winning over that
"girl in the crowd" and sounds very
"Copacabana-ish." If you can't
dance to the Gibson Brothers you
should go back to your neighbor-
hood disco dance school and start
over. The horns will sell this one and
make it at least an 8 out of 10.
Heart of the Nioht-Poco-MCA
MCA 41023
z---
What started out to be a rather
obscure lp effort by Poco on the now
defunct ABC label has risen to a
well-deserved prominence in a musi-
cal spotlight . This has been accom-
plished so far on the strength of a
musically perfect tune called "Crazy
Love." Now Poco would like to place
a strangle-hold on the music-buying
public with this ballad about New
Orleans, Lake Pontchartrain, street
partyin' til dawn, and mellow, wistful
sunsets. It sounds a lot like some-
thing the Eagles would do, but that's
okay, especially since those birds are
so "overdue" it's not even funny .
The highlight of the tune is Phil
Kenzie's brilliant sax solo . Check it
out and see why it's a sure shot for a
9 out of 10.
Shakedown Cruise-Jay Fergu-
son-Asylum E-46041-A
Just when you thought the
"dream" vacation to Thunder Island
was on the home stretch of an
imaginary voyage, this ex-Spirit
member takes us on a Shakedown
Cruise. It's good rock n' roll from
Jay's latest lp effort titled "Real Life
Ain't This Way ." The instrumenta-
tion is next to flawless and there's
even a touch of humor in the lyrics:
"The captain says if you want some
sex, you can squeeze the sails, you
can lick the decks" (smacks of an
erotic old sailor's tale). Watch this
one fly, I mean "float" up the charts.
An 8 out of 10 on the Matthews
