Holmes & Co. Sell Nine Kohler & Campbell
Pianos for Use in Levittown Schools
Ladies of the Land since 1903. In that
year, President Theodore Roosevelt
graciously accepted on behalf of the
American nation the one-hundred-
thousandth Sleinway as a gift from
Sleinway & Sons. This piano was in
the East Room of the White House,
and was used al all musical functions.
New Grand in 1938

LEVITTOWN SCHOOLS.
On December 10, 1938, Steinway &
Sons replaced the first White House
Steinway concert grand with another
instrument specially designed by dis-
tinguished artists and approved by the
Committee of Fine Arts of the United
States.
Il may be interesting to mention
that the first White House Steinway
concert grand is now in the Smith-
sonian Institute in Washington, D. C.
From 1903 up to his death in 1939.
Henry Junge was entrusted with as-
sisting in the arrangements of these
musicales. After Mr. Junge's death A.
W . Creiner, head of the Concert and
Artist Department of Steinway & Sons.
took over these activities, and he had
the privilege of assisting Mrs. Mary
Jane McCaffrec. social secretary to
Mrs. Eisenhower, in the arrangements
of ihe musicales enumerated above.
Harry Holmes, head of Holmes &
Co.. Hempstead. L. I., recently sold
several Kohler & Campbell studio oak
pianos for the Levittown, L. I. public
school system. The pianos were placed
in three different schools last month.
Four of these instruments are shown
in the accompanying illustration. The
total sales comprised 9 of these pianos,
which are now being used daily in the
public schools in Levittowi . L. I.

Plans White House Musicales

been privileged to assist the First
With the inauguration of President
Eisenhower, musicales at the White
Houes were resumed; they had been
discontinued during the war years. In
the course of the year, there were a
number of state functions, and on
December 15, 1953, a musicale fol-
lowed the Diplomatic Dinner. The
artist at this musicale was Gladys
Swarthout, mezzo-soprano; George
Trovillo was the accompanist.
Several other State Dinners were
given at the White House followed by
musicales: On January 19th this year
at a dinner for the Vice President
"The Men of Song," vocal quartet,
sang; on January 27th there was a
dinner for the President of Turkey at
which Frank Guarrera, baritone of The
Metropolitan Opera Co. sang with ac-
companist Alexander Alexay.
On February 16th at a dinner for
the Speaker of the House, Joe Martin,
Morton Downey, tenor, assisted by
James S. Rule, pianist; Carmen Mas-
tren. guitarist, appeared.

art Ross, accompanist, entertained.

The American Foundrymen's Society
held its show recently in Cleveland, ()..
in the Public Auditorium and one of
the exhibitors was the O. S. Kelly Co.
of Springfield, Ohio, manufacturer of
the Kelly piano plates which are used
in many American pianos.
In commenting on the exhibit. Carl
Ultes. Jr.. of the company said. "W e
were very much honored recently to
have our product chosen as an ex-
cellent example of gray iron casting
for the exhibit at the recent biennial
American Foundrymen's Society Foun-
dry Show in Cleveland's Public Audi-
torium."
