OBITUARIES
CHARLES H. STEPHENSON
Charles Henry Stephenson, 81, owner
of Stephenson Music Co., Raleigh, N. C.
passed away on May 16th after a short
illness.
After graduation from Campbell
Academy, he taught school in Apex for
a time. Later, in 1899, he became book-
keeper for Dewar and Wilder, whole-
sale grocers.
In 1907, he and the late Zol Fonville
opened the Fonville-Stephenson Variety
Store. Later, it became Stephenson Va-
riety Store. In 1924, he organized and
founded what is still Stephenson Music
Co. In 1930, Stephenson Music Co.
moved to 121 Fayetteville St., where it
remained for 20 years. Recently, the
store moved to Cameron Village where
Mr. Stephenson was very active.
He was also an active member of the
Christian Church, of which he was a
deacon and chairman of the building
committee. For many years he was su-
perintendent of the Sunday School and
was also president of the North Carolina
and Virginia Christian Sunday School
Conference.
Mr. Stephenson was also active in
civic affairs, and was a former member
of the Junior Order, the Lions Club and
the Chamber of Commerce.
Funeral services were held May 17th
from the First Presbyterian Church.
The Rev. Charles Lynn Brown of White
Memorial Presbyterian Church officiated.

Erdoesy, D. W. Thomas. E. H. Kendrick,
S. A. Parrish and P. A. Moody, em-
ployees of the Stephenson Co., were pall
bearers.
Surviving are his wife, the former
Annie E. Jones; four sons, William Her-
nias Stephenson of Red Bank, N. J.;
Charles Henry Stephenson, Jr.. Royal C.
Stephenson, and James Thomas Stephen-
son, all of Raleigh; a daughter, Mrs.
R. O. Caveness of Raleigh; seven grand-
children and two great-grandchildren.
Two half-sisters, Mrs. Daniel Stephen-
son and Mrs. Frank Smith, also survive.
S. E. ROSE
S. E. Rose of the Maus Piano Co.
of Raleigh, N. C. was killed recently in
a head on collision near Raleigh while
returning to Raleigh from a sales trip
in Eastern North Carolina.
Mr. Rose was born January 12. 1918
in Goldsboro, N. C. and from early boy-
hood worked with his father, S. L. Rose,
who was a piano tuner and dealer in
Goldsboro. Through this work, young

Rose became an expert tuner and repair-
man at an early age.
In 1936 he worked as a tuner-salesman
for the Jesse G. Bowen Music Company
of Winston-Salem, N. C. and about 1938
went to work for the Manning Piano
Company in Raleigh, N. C.
During World War II Mr. Rose served
with the U. S. Navy as a radarman from
1942 until his discharge in October
1945. Most of his active duty was seen
on a sub-chaser in the South Pacific.
After his discharge from the Navy,
Mr. Rose returned to Raleigh and joined
the Maus Piano Co. as a partner.
Mr. Rose is survived by his wife, the
former Miss Eleanor Hedrick who also
served as a WAVE in the Navy and
two children, Silas E. Jr. aged three
years and a daughter, Dianne Catherine,
aged 15 months.

lever, flange and butt is all in one,
