A series of comprehensive tests is
given during the course, one every four
weeks, covering the material a student
has had during that segment of the
course. Also, each student constructs
2 action models during the first 5
months of the course, an upright model
action and a grand model action. From
this project they learn repair and reg-

at School of Piano Tuning and Maintenance
A recent visitor to the School of
Piano Tuning and Maintenance of the
American Operatic Laboratory, Inc.,
Los Angeles, Cal., was William C.
Heaton, Pacific Coast representative of
Kohler Campbell Inc., New York, who
Maintenance. The work of the course
is divided into 5 major units, covered
daily by both the day and evening
classes. These units are: Theory, In-
dividual Tuning, Class Tuning, Action
Repair, and Case Repair. The Theory

addressed the class of 24 students and
answered various questions.
"This school" says Mr. Heaton "is
very complete and the organization
covers about every department pertain-
ing to music and dramatics."
The tuning course, which is veteran
approved, first started in February
1948, with the purpose of giving stu-
dents, in the span of one year, the
fundamentals of Piano Tuning and
class lays the groundwork for the tun-
ing procedure and enters into discus-
sions of methods and problems of action
regulation and repair. (Mass tuning pro-
vides opportunity for the student to
tune before the group under super-
vision of the instructor, followed each
day by an individual tuning period in
the practice rooms. The shop work gives
all students experience in all types of
repairs and action regulation, under
ulation of all types of piano actions.
Several of the graduates are em-
ployed at present in some of the larger
piano shops in the Los Angeles area.
A few have gone into business for
themselves, while a number of others
are in the process of building up their
own tuner-technician business.

Tolberf F. Cheek Has Plant
for Building Player Parts

lieve this is the only one of its kind ever

There has been no attempt to supply
Tolbert F. Cheek active for many
years during the era of the player piano
in creating devices for and building
player actions has for several years been
building and servicing pipe organs with
headquarters at 11 Beaupert Ave.,
Gloucester, Mass.
Recently he purchased a small fac-
tory and has set up machinery for re-
building parts for player pianos. He
has trained his son, Wallace Cheek, in
this work about which he states:
"In the past few years I have many
calls for player parts and repairs, along
with my regular run of piano and organ
work. Not so long ago I purchased a
small factory and set up the machinery
for rebuilding parts and then trained
my son, Wallace Cheek, on this special
department. We make many other pneu-
matics and electro pneumatic parts for
organs too. In the past two years there
has been a number of our latest iplastic
twin unit pneumatic made, the smallest
of its kind for the direct spinet piano.
So far only electric motor control, with
