Oswald Neumann, piano man and tuner
technician of Paragould, Ark., says there
has been an "antique fever" regarding
pianos in his territory. Sometime ago he
was called upon to rebuild a piano ex-
plained in a recent letter to Louis F. Rup-
pel of Kranich & Bach, New York, as fol-
lows:
"Your information how to modernize an
old Grand is invaluable, and I thank you
again. However, it seems now that this
would have been the wrong thing to do
decidedly, as we are having here a se-
rious epidemic of "antique fever". Last
year the Prosecuting Attorney of Craig-
head County sent us an old Marshall &
Wendell Square, of '63 vintage to com-
pletely rebuild. He bought the thing for
$5, and the rats had had their State con-
vention in it. It was a sight to behold.
Yet he took it from here to his magnificent
home in Jonesboro—a $30,000 proposition,
and it is sitting in his lovely parlor —
"Believe it or not", with apologies to Bob
Ripley.
"So our dear Kranich & Bach may yet
adorn the parlor of some friend of an-
tiques, but my wife says it will stay right
here, for even now it is getting to look
very aristorcratic. I never could see why
you folks would place such magnificent
workmanship on your cases, such fine
veneers, etc.. and then cover it all up
with black varnish?
"Please let me know if at any time I
can be of service to you, and if anybody
wants to know where to buy a new Kran-
ich & Bach, I shall just give them your
address, which I am only too proud to
have."
Joins Family on the Coast
Carl B. Edwards, for seven years con-
nected with the piano department of John
Wanamaker, New York, resigned the first
of the year to join his family in Oakland,
Cal. His future business plans have not
been announced, but before leaving he
said he might enter the piano business on
his own on the Pacific Coast, where he
resided previously for many years.
