MARTIN BAND INSTRUMENT

PEDLER TAKES OVER BIRKEL
REPAIRS DEPARTMENT
SWIFT & CO. OFFER ANNUAL
PRIZE FOR CHORAL WORK
According to a letter sent to the trade
by the Martin Band Instrument Co., there
were 167 new agencies for Martin instru-
ments established during 1931, while Martin
dealers generally sold more instruments of
that make in 1931 than in 1930. The growth
of the Martin dealer list is ascribed not only
to quality of the products but to the fact
that the company sells only through organized
dealers.
The band instrument repair shop operated
by Birkel Music Co., Los Angeles, Cal., has
been purchased by Harry W. Pedler, Jr.,
former vice-president of Harry Pedler & Co.,
prominent manufacturers of woodwind in-
struments in Elkhart, Ind. Mr. Pedler, through
his long connection with the manufacturing
business, has a thorough understanding of
musical instruments and methods for keeping
them in proper condition and it is expected
that he will make a distinct success of the
new venture, particularly as the Birkel Music
Co. is one of the largest music houses on the
Pacific Coast.
Swift & Co., the Chicago packers, are
offering their usual annual cash prize of
$100 for a choral composition to be sung by
the Swift Male Chorus. The poem to be
sung is "Reveille," and the music must be
by a resident of America. It is to be for
a chorus of male voices, with piano accom-
paniment. As usual U. A. Clippinger, Kim-
ball Hall, Chicago, is chairman of the jury
of awards, and manuscripts must reach him
by June 15, 1932.
The York Band Instrument Co., Grand
Rapids, Mich., is this year celebrating the
Golden Anniversary of the founding of the
business in 1882.
