resonated more effectively than is now pos-
sible. If anything can be done alone these lines
the piano will become a more flexible and more
delightful instrument of music. The studies
ulready made in this laboratory on the re-
sponses of strings and soundboard to varying
hammer velocities show that at present the tone
color properties of the piano arc too nearly
stationary in the higher regions. It is our hope
to learn facts about resonance and the sound-
board which shall open the way to genuine im-
provement in these respects.
It may be altogether wrong, but it seems to
me that the future of the piano docs not lie
in its becoming more but less strident, not
more but less noisy. At the same time 1 think
it should become not less but more flexible, not
less but more sensitive in respect of tone qual-
ity changes in response to variations of ham-
mer velocity. I have always held that the piano
has not yet been fully developed on its tmnl
side. Until this shall have conic to pass no other
improvement need be considered essential. Nev-
ertheless, the Moor keyboard is both ingenious
and useful. If it comes into general use for
the concert stage, interest in piano playing will
certainly thereby be increased.
