Helping Public Understand
Musical Instruments
(Continued from page 31)
telephone immediately after the close of the
program, and it is believed that the others will
make a similar impression and become increas-
ingly popular as the series becomes better
known. A number of prominent artists have
been engaged to appear in the program in addi-
tion to Mr. Smedley, they including Frank
Reino, formerly featured banjoist with Vincent
Lopez and other orchestras; Walter Hegner,
noted saxophone soloist now with the Garrick
"Gaieties," and Frosini, the talented performer
on the piano accordion. Thus, in turn, will be
featured the saxophone, the banjo, clarinet,
piano accordion, trumpet, etc., with appropriate
explanatory comments.
In support of the broadcast program, Landay
Bros, are offering the public the services of
their educational division headed by L. H.
McQueston, who has had many years of ex-
perience in all phases of musical work from
player to bandmaster.
For the youngsters
there will be a Junior Music League with free
membership and free magazine, w r hose activities
will be devoted chiefly to the discussion of
student music problems. Eventually it is hoped
that as a result of the broadcasts there will be
organized in many cities and towns, particularly
in the East, group ensembles of amateur
musicians to make up guitar and mandolin

clubs, banjo bands, saxophone choirs, and even
larger organizations.
The main feature of the whole movement, that
is of particular interest to the trade at large,
is that it is calculated to give the public a
better understanding of many types of musical
instruments. It is one thing to hear them
play, but it is quite another to have their out-
standing features explained while they are be-
ing played. While the movement is being spon-
sored by Landay Bros, it should be of distinct
benefit to every dealer in music instruments
who takes proper advantage of the opportunity
to capitalize the public interest.
It is interesting to learn that, displaying a
proper understanding of the matter, those
arranging the programs have taken steps to
keep them from becoming dry or stilted by
providing not only individual artists for demon-
strating the instruments, but arranging for
various instrument groups from trios to full
orchestras to provide ensemble playing for
entertainment purposes in connection with the
program proper.

New Catalog of American
Plating and Mfg. Co.
The new catalog of th-e American Plating &
Mfg. Co., 20 E. Cullerton street, Chicago, is just
out and President H. W. Pidgeon is justifiably
proud of its form and contents. He calls it a
catalog of "Musical Instrument Accessories"
and musical instrument dealers will be greatly
interested in the contents of the entire booklet.
The most important feature of the catalog is
two new instruments which have already had
a great success and justify Mr. Pidgeon's judg-
ment in bringing them out at this time. One
of these is the Saxette, the other is the Vocal
Jazz-Sax. Five different types of fifes and the
flageolet made by the company, mouth pieces,
flutes, orchestra novelties, etc., are shown.
For twenty-five years we have been
rebuilding, repairing and plating; brass
band instruments for dealers and pro-
fessionals all over the United States.
