School Bands Now the
Market, Declares Bundy
ELKHART, IND.—George M. Bundy, president of
the House of Selmer, who recently returned
from an extended visit to France, brought back
an excellent report regarding conditions in the
musical merchandise field abroad, particularly as
they concern manufacturers of reed instru-
ments and parts. There was considerable specu-
lation, of course, regarding tariff activities in
the United States, but it is hoped that the final
instruments is the highest priced on the market,
we are doing a mighty encouraging business
with our most expensive models with school
musicians. I believe that the idea that the
school demand is going to be for cheaper in-
struments almost exclusively is erroneous. We
have placed a large number of $200 Selmer
Master metal clarinets, $185 silver flutes, and
$300 gold-plated alto saxophones with high
school musicians during the past year or so.
We have had displays at the Joliet (1928) and
Denver (1929) high school band contests, 'and
have been amazed to find that the class of
school musicians in these bands selected to go
to the National contest are interested almost
solely in our best instruments."
The Keyboard Banjo Co. of Columbus, O.,
has been incorporated by M. B. Vilas, M. T.
Gorton and M. Rush.
The Bell Music Co., of Peru, Ind., has pur-
chased the Martz Music Shop in Kokomo, Ind.,
and will operate the business as a branch.

Nicomede to Publish
New Accordion Books
Joseph W. Nicomede, head of the Nicomede
Music Co., popular publishers of Altoona, Pa.,
announces that his firm is now publishing six
new up-to-date books for the accordion. The
collection will consist of one exclusively modern
piano accordion method which will be known
as the "Royal Method for Piano Accordion,"
by Mario. This method will introduce for the
first time many added features, novelties, etc.,
including orchestral accordion playing. The
other publications are the "Rainbow Folio," the
"Victory Folio" and the "Gold Folios" in three
volumes. These folios will contain solos, duets,
and accordion band arrangements. All the above
books are written and arranged by Mario, one
of America's leading accordion soloists and
teachers. Mario has just been placed under
contract to write exclusively for the Nicomede
Music Co.

bill will not place an unbearable burden on the
European manufacturers.
Mr. Bundy found that Henri Selmer was do-
ing a very satisfactory business in his factory
at Mantes, some forty miles from Paris, and is
enjoying a world-wide demand for the Selmer
line of reed instruments and saxophones.
Early in 1929 Henri Selmer incorporated his
business as H. Selmer & Co., the stockholders
being Henri, Alexandre and Maurice Selmer,
Henri Lefebvre and Maurice Lefebvre. Henri
Selmer is the directing head, Alexandre Selmer
is artistic director in charge of the musical
qualities of the instruments, and Maurice Sel-
mer is in charge of sales. The Lefebvres are
in charge of the manufacturing department at
the Paris headquarters. The Selmer American
house, of which Mr. Bundy is head, is the sole
representative of Selmer in the United States
and Canada, occupying its own building in Elk-
hart, comprising 40,000 square feet of floor
space.
In discussing business prospects, Mr. Bundy
said: "Our American business is progressing
satisfactorily, and we have been able to give
our customers much better service during the
past three years. While general conditions in
this industry have not been any too rosy these
three years, everything is now looking up, and
I look forward to the best Fall and Winter
business in years. The school band and orches-
tra activity, while very lively, particularly in
the West and Middle West, is but started. A
field is being opened here for musical merchan-
dise that dwarfs the professional demand even
in its best years. While the Selmer line of reed

A SATISFIED CUSTOMER
J. N. Walsingham, of Birmingham, England, Expert Tutor on the Banjo,
Tenor Banjo and Hawaiian Guitar, writes as follows:
August 23, 1929.
"The enclosed letter is from my partner, and a testimonial in such glowing
terms from him must certainly be very good, as he has played on many makes of
Banjos during the past few years, and I am sure you will be pleased to read such
an appreciative letter from one across the water.
"I have unpacked my new No. 2 B&D Silver Bell, 5-String Banjo today, and
it certainly bears out the description. Beautifully finished, tone clear at the top
fret as at the bottom. The 4th string is the best I have ever heard. It is strung
with all Gut Strings which were in perfect tune when I put the Bridge up.
When you put the Mute on, the effect is amazing. The frets are wonderfully
smooth and the pegs are perfect. Indeed, a wonderful instrument which gives
me great pleasure."
