Theme Songs Boosting
Brunswick Record Sales
SAN
FRANCISCO,
CAL., May
25.—C. P.
Mac-
Gregor, manager for the Brunswick phonograph
in this territory, is visiting dealers in Fresno
and other points in central California. Every-
where he finds that theme songs, used in sound
pictures are a wonderful help to sales of
records. At local headquarters of the Bruns-
wick today it was stated that there is a big
demand for the three leading theme songs of
"Broadway Melody," now at the Columbia
Theater here. They were a 11 recorded for the
Brunswick in Los Angeles by the F.arl Burtnett
orchestra. Paul Peppin of the Brunswick
Co.'s Los Angeles branch is here and says that
theme songs have done more than anything
else to popularize phonograph records. Peo-
ple are buying the records very generally in
order to hear the songs, when they want to
hear them. The latest record song hit is "The
Pagan Love Song," theme song in "The Pagan"
now playing here.

E. C. Mills, chairman of the board of Music-
Publishers' Protective Association, has just
sent out a letter of caution to orchestra leaders,
organists and professional musicians, with re-
spect to practices of deception on the part of
certain "music service" companies in various
parts of the country. The full letter follows:
"Reports have reached this office that agents,
alleging themselves to be representatives of
music supply or music service companies or
corporations, are calling upon leaders, organ-
ists and musicians throughout the middle west,
and making statements to the general effect
that the music publishers are going to discon-
tinue the custom of sending direct professional
copies, orchestrations, and such-like material.
"Upon the basis of such representations these
agents solicit subscriptions to a service—gen-
erally priced at $6.00 per year—under which
the buyer is told that he will receive a regular
supply of such material through the agency,
instead of direct from publishers. The buyer is
solicited to pay any part of the sum down—
the balance to be paid later.
"You are advised that none of the members
of this Association are parties to any such ar-
rangement, and that the reputable publishers
are continuing, until you are further advised
directly by them, their current business poli-
cies.
"It is suggested, in order that you avoid be-
ing victimized, that before subscribing to any
s*uch scheme you secure from the solicitor, in
writing, a list of the different firms in whose
behalf it is promised that material will be sent
under the subscription. If such list includes
any of the members of this association, list of
whom is printed on the reverse side hereof,
kindly immediately advise this office.
"We will take all legal means of preventing
such impositions upon you."

Witmark Orchestra Series
Praised by Many Critics
Despite the fact that the first twenty-six num-
bers of the Witmark Philharmonic Series have
just been released, M. Witmark & Sons, the
publishers, report a most gratifying response
from motion picture recording studios, radio
stations, orchestra directors and music dealers
throughout the country. This stupendous cata-
log of "tone-color'' music seems to meet a dis-
tinct need for compositions of this type.
Unsolicited testimonials have been received
from men prominent in the musical world,
praising this masterful work and congratulating
the publishers on their enterprise and progres-
siveness in undertaking a task of such magni-
tude. An enthusiastic letter has been received
from Erno Rapee, musical director of the Roxy
Theatre, New York, whose symphony orchestra
of 110 men is said to be the largest and finest
of any motion picture house in the world.
Mr. Rapee's letter reads: "I just received
your Philharmonic Photoplay Series and I want
to congratulate you upon the excellence of
your new catalog. 1 am sure it enriches mo-
tion picture literature considerably and it is un-
doubtedly one of the best compiled catalogs of
its kind that has been brought to my notice.
"The titling of the different pieces is both
imaginative and artistic, while the sub-titles are
explanatory and practical. The musical vari-
ety of the numbers covers the entire gamut of
emotions. I will be happy to use this splendid
catalog."
