cal show, "Good News," was used recently by
the Southern California Music Co. here, with
the able assistance of Ben Berman, local rep-
resentative for DeSylva, Brown & Henderson,
Inc., New York, publishers of the songs and
score. The window tied up nicely with the re-
cent opening of a "Good News" road company
in Los Angeles, which has met with great suc-
cess. A novel idea was carried out in the win-
dow by pasting up copies of the Examiner,
Evening Herald, Evening Express and other
local papers on a large board. Each of these
papers contained "flash" headlines of some im-
portant world news, and a copy of a song from
"Good News" showed through a large hole torn
in each paper. The display was topped by oval
photographs of the three writer-publishers of
the score, B. G. DeSylva, Lew Brown and Ray
Henderson.

Cycles in Song Writing
With L. Wolfe Gilbert
Well Known Composer Again at Top With
"Ramona," With May Sales of Over Quarter
of a Million
L. Wolfe Gilbert, co-writer of "Ramona," was
recently made the subject of an article on cycles
in writing successful popular songs, which ap-
peared in the theatrical section of the Sunday
edition of the New York Telegraph. The
article tells how Mr. Gilbert started about
twenty years ago with "Waiting for the Robert
E. Lee," following which he turned out a series
of hits. Later, he lost his grip and took a
"back seat." Another cycle began, however,
when he turned out "My Little Dream Girl,"
"My Sweet Adair," "Lily of the Valley," and
others. He then went into business as a pub-
lisher and another slump followed.
Since that time, he has been a member of
Ihe professional staff of Leo Feist, Inc., New
York, and his third cycle of hits started with
"O Katharina," after practically everybody in
the business thought he was through writing.
In this cycle he has produced also "Don't Wake
Me Up Let Me Dream," "I Miss My Swiss,"
and finally "Ramona," which is said to have
sold more than a quarter of a million copies
during May, ordinarily a slow month for sheet
music sales.
