Number Taking Course Conducted by Buffalo "Evening News" and Local Piano Mer-
chants Exceeds Expectations—Victor Dealers Outing
DUFFALO, N. Y., July 26.—Buffalo's music
merchants are exceptionally well pleased
with the results of the Melody Way Club which
the Piano Merchant's Association is conducting
in cooperation with the Buffalo "Evening
News." Classes are reaching proportions be-
yond expectations of dealers, and in many in-
stances additional teachers have been called in
to handle the growing groups. Not only are
classes large and interested, but the prospect
lists are growing rapidly. Straight pianos and
grands are in better demand now than they have
been for the past two or three years.
Charles Hoffman, head of the Hoffman Piano
Co., is keenly enthusiastic over the Melody Way
proposition, and declares results have gone vast-
ly beyond his expectations, not only in the size
of classes, but also in the number of piano
prospects secured. Since the beginning of the
classes two weeks ago, sales in straight pianos
and grands have been materially increased over
any previous period this spring or summer.
There is an increasing tendency toward grands,
he said, and he expects July and August to
close with a much greater volume of sales than
for the same period of last year.
A. W. Erion, of the Erion Piano Co., is ex-
ceptionally optimistic in view of Fall piano
business resulting from the Melody Way
classes. Enrollment has been much greater at
this store than officials had anticipated, and
there is a very encouraging list of prospects
among those registered.
The Buffalo "Evening News," which is put-
ting on the Melody Way program here, has en-
rolled more than 3,000 pupils so far this Sum-
mer, and the list is expected to swell as more
dealers enter their names in the list of those
now operating Melody Way club rooms. Sheet
music sales also are beginning to swell, since
children have begun taking greater interest in
piano playing, it is reported at one of the lead-
ing sheet music counters. Miss Marion Haley,
manager of the Kresge counte •, is of th- opin-
ion that publicity given piano playing has had
much to do with stimulating its sales the past
two weeks.
Manager Gifford, of the piano department of
the Brunswick Music House, reports straight
piano and grand sa'es greater during the months

Instrument, Furnished by Maison Blanche, of
New Orleans, Outstanding in Musical Pro-
gram
Knabe Ampico Week was celebrated recently
at the new $2,500,000 dollar Saenger Theatre in
New Orleans. The feature of the performance
was the playing of Liszt's "Liebestraum," as re-
corded by Leo Onstein for the Ampico and ac-
companied by John Hammond on the grand
organ of the theatre. In a special Sunday con-
cert, the Grieg concerto in A minor was pre-
sented through the Knabe Ampico, also at this
time accompanied by Mr. Hammond on the or-
gan.
An interesting fact in connection with the
playing of the "Liebestraum" was that the roll
was a stock record and not intended for use
with an accompanying instrument. Mr. Ham-
mond's arrangement for the organ, however,
provided an exceptionally tasteful musical back-
ground that added much in richness and dignity
to the Ampico presentation. The audience was
highly enthusiastic and the Maison Blanche Co.,
local Knabe Ampico representative, received
many favorable comments on the beautiful tone
of the Knabe and the wonderful playing of the
Ampico.
The Maison Blanche Co. was successful in
selling a Knabe concert grand, of special art
Knabe in Saenger Theatre
an order for a Knabe grand piano for another
new Saenger playhouse in Mobile, Ala. Both
the Maison Blanche Co. and the Saenger Thea-
tre featured the playing of the Knabe Ampico
in their newspaper advertisements.
Baldwin Reproducer
Joined With Theatre Organ
The equipment of the Picadilly Theatre, Chi-
cago, includes a Baldwin Welte-Mignon (Lic-
ensee) reproducing grand which is so connected
with the organ that it may be controlled directly
by the organist from his console and thereby
fills an important and highly interesting part in
the musical program of this popular playhouse.
This unusual hook-up has attracted wide atten-
tion for it serves to increase the musical or
rather instrumental range of the modern theatre
pipe organ and makes possible the control by
•he organist of piano parts of orchestral works
played on the larger instrument. The Baldwin
grand is placed in a richly decorated niche at
the right of the stage replacing the ordinary
proscenium box, and is in full view of the audi-
ence at all times during the rendition of the
program.
Will attract the attention of those
who know and appreciate tone guality
