Band Contest Will Be Feature of
Wisconsin State Fair Children's Day
Five Hundred Dollars in Cash Prizes to Be Offered to Contestants—Wisconsin Passes
Statute Permitting Municipal Taxation for Support of Bands

•L** of band instrument business continues in
Milwaukee and surrounding towns. Dealers in
this city are especially interested in the de-
cision which has recently been made to have a
State-wide school band contest as a feature of
Children's Day at the Wisconsin State Fair
this year. Five hundred dollars in prizes will
be offered, and coming as it does right after
the recent school band tournament in Mil-
waukee and the number of sectional tourna-
ments, dealers view it as a favorable reaction
toward musical contests of this kind.
The band contest will be a feature of the
opening day of the Fair, August 29. Bands will
be divided into two classes according to the
age of the contestants and prizes of $100, $75,
$50 and $25 will be awarded in each class.
Another thing which has helped to put Wis-
consin music dealers into an amiable frame of
mind during the past week is the fact that their
efforts to put through legislation allowing a
city, town, or village in the State to levy a tax
for the support of a municipal band have been
successful. The bill has been passed and has
received the signature of Governor Fred R.
Zimmerman. With the approval of the voters
any of the civic units named may levy a tax
not exceeding one mill, on all taxable property
within its limits for the support of such a band.
Band instrument men have, of course,
strongly favored this legislation and have
pointed out that it is another step forward for
musical merchandise business in Wisconsin and
that the school contests and numerous sectional
competitions have worked up a spirit among
the people in towns which makes them look
kindly on civic musical organizations. They
feel sure that this will have a favorable effect
on the volume of band instrument business.

Waukesha out for its first appearance during
the past week. The band has agreed to fur-
nish a series of ten band concerts at Cutler
park during the Summer and the opening pro-
gram proved a real success. Mr. Walker has also
announced the organization of another Buescher
band in the Polish district of Milwaukee which
will be called the Nowiny Polski band and
which will be directed by Mr. Walker himself.
Mr. Walker says that he believes that the op-
portunities offered in forming community
bands are enormous and States that he is of
the opinion that with school business becom-
ing so well organized it behooves the music
merchant to develop the band instrument busi-
ness among people who would not be reached
through schools. "There are a number of
people beyond school age who have a desire to
get more musical training," said Mr. Walker,
"and in getting them to join a community band
I believe that it is possible to work up a good
condition for the future."
The Flanner-Hafsoos Music House, Inc., is
advertising Conn band instruments by show-
ing that they are used and endorsed by some
of the most popular orchestras in the city. In
the window of the store is a huge display card
stating that Conn instruments are "The Artist's
Choice" and carrying a list of names which in-
cludes the orchestras of the Wisconsin Thea-
tre, the Alhambra Theatre and the Strand,
Modjeska and Merrill theatres, as well as the
Billy Adair orchestra which is playing at the
mammoth new Oriental show house here.

featured in advertising literature furnished to
dealers by C. F. Martin & Co., the local
stringed instrument manufacturing concern,
that is rounding out a century of musical in-
strument making with some of the finest in-
struments in its history. "Musical, Durable,
Beautiful," is the slogan featured and it brings
out three important points in the making of
Martin instruments.
"In the construction of Martin ukuleles,"
states C. Frederick Martin, vice-president of
the company, "the principle on which Martin
guitars have been made for ninety-four years
are applied. These include natural air-drying,

careful gauging, correct bracing, keeping the
instrument as light in weight as durability
will permit, making a tone that is famous
wherever ukuleles are played. Each instrument

Recent Visitors at
Holton & Go. Factory
EI.KHORN, Wis., July 11.—Recent visitors to the
band instrument factory of Frank Holton &
Co. have included M. R. Ault, of Ault's Music
Shop, Fort Worth, Tex., and L. V. Buckton,
of New York, former Holton agent in Ames,
la. Another visitor was D. W. Boland, who
operates a Holton agency under that name in
Minneapolis and who has just been appointed
bandmaster of the Naval Reserve Band of that
district. He purchased a new De Luxe finish
Holton-Clarke trumpet for his broadcast from
station WCCO, July 16. Frank Holton & Co.
are urging their dealers to select this pleasant
season of the year for their visit to Elkhorn,
which is in the center of the famous Lake
Geneva section, one of the most beautiful spots
in Wisconsin, with hundreds of miles of con-
crete roads in every direction.
Buys Gullen & Myers Section
MARIETTA, O., July 11.—The Wainwright Music
Co. has closed a deal with the Cullen & Myers
Co. whereby it takes over the musical mer-
chandise department of the latter company at
125 Putnam street. D. M. Cullen will be
associated with the Wainwright Music Co. in
the capacity of salesman.
Buegeleisen Returns
Samuel Buegeleisen, head of Buegeleisen &
Tacobson, wholesalers of musical merchandise,
5-7-9 Union Square, New York, returned this
week on the S. S. "Majestic" from Europe,
where he spent about two months visting the
musical merchandise market.
To Entertain the Leaders
EI.KHORN, Wis., July 11.—The six Holton
agents throughout the United States who show
the greatest volume of sales in their respective
divisions for the four months' period which
began in April will be the guests of Frank
Holton & Co. in August.
