Sax and Banjo in
Classic Music Writing
Use of Lyon & Healy Instruments in Harling
Score Being Followed by Other Composers
in This Work
CHICAGO, 111., November 19.—Many will recall
the premiere of W. Franke Harling's "A Light
From St. Agnes," presented at the Auditorium
Theatre, Chicago, on December 26, 1925.
The composer, Harling, made provision for
two instruments that never before had been
employed in grand opera—the saxophone and
the banjo. After combing the city, Mr. Harling
succeeded in securing Joseph Bilotts, one of
the foremost saxophonists and instructors in
Chicago, and Frank Lanham, equally famous as
A banjoist.
The instruments they brought with them were
designed to reproduce faithfully the scores
written for them. Lyon & Healy, of Chicago,
takes special pride in the fact that both debut-
making "sax" and "jo" were of Lyon & Healy
make.
Baisa, Baklanoff and Lamont, all principals
in the opera that occasioned such an orchestral
departure, heartily endorsed the novelty. The
popularity of both these instruments and the
increase in their employment in classical com-
positions may be said to have been largely
influenced by the drawing innovation.

Weil-Known Featured Player Shows Harmony
Smeck Vita-Uke During His Theatrical Tour
CHICAGO, 111., November 21—Perhaps one of
the reasons for the growing popularity of the
Roy Smeck Vita-Uke, made by the Harmony
Co., of Chicago, is the co-operation that is pro-
vided the trade in having Roy Smeck, the well-
known wizard of the strings, appear at the
various music stores in the cities he visits on
his tour to the theatres.
Roy Smeck, in a clever act, demonstrates the
merits of the instruments he plays, including
the Vita-Uke, and is tying up his stage ap-
pearances with demonstrations in the music
stores. The Harmony Co. has received a num-
ber of letters from the dealers that Mr. Smeck
lias visited, expressing appreciation for this pro-
motional work, which is boosting the sale of
stringed instruments.
The well known artist, who has recorded for
the Vitaphone, has already appeared in Chicago
;md many of the large Eastern cities and is now
in the South. Some of the cities on his itinerary
include Houston, New Orleans, Baton Rouge,
Alexandria, Little Rock, Birmingham and At-
lanta.
The dealers whom Mr. Smeck has already
visited appreciate having this headliner, for i»
adds a great deal of prestige to their establish-
ments, demonstrates the quality and features of
the instruments, and interests the public in a
highly effective way, the value of which has
already been" reflected in the increased sale of
Vita-Ukes.
