Cundy-Bettoney Co. Issues Complete
Catalog of Firm's Famous Woodwind Line
Nine Models of Silva-Bet Metal Clarinets Illustrated and Described in Three Finishes
Among the Instruments Listed in the Publication
[^OSTON, MASS., October 15.—What is be-
lieved to be the first listing in history of a
complete line of silver clarinets is the feature of
the new catalog just issued by the Cundy-Bet-
toney Co., Jamaica Plain, makers of the famous
Silva-Bet and other wood-wind instruments. An-
own high-grade wood-wind instruments. Under
his management, with the assistance of his son,
Ralph A. Bettoney, and a staff of experts, the
company has become the largest manufacturer
of high-grade clarinets, flutes and other wood-
wind instruments in America, employing mem-
bers of symphony orchestras for testing and
research work.
The Bettoney flute, "The Strad of the
Flutist's World," is one of the products of the
company and the full line is shown in the cata-
log which pictures a collection of twenty-five
different models of flutes and piccolos.
The company makes three types of clarinets,
using African grenadilla wood, "Bettonite," a
composition material, and metal.
Two pages of well-knowrj users of the Silva-
Bet are shown, including Ross Gorman, Roy
Schmidt, George Grizez, Edmond Allegra, Paul
Mitnart, Lucien Calliet, P. Tarantula, Stephen
August Vanninni, Clarence Page, G. S. Howard,
Harry Brandon, Harry Baldwin, Charles Brend-
ler, Art Bean and C. B. Fletcher.
British Vega Folder
BOSTON, MASS., October 15.—"Doubling made
easy with the new Vega tenor-lute and tenor-
guitar," is the slogan that quickly strikes one
who picks up the folder that has just reached
the Vega Co., in this city, from Hawkes &
Son, Denman street, London, England, which
house is the sole agents for the Vega products.
This house also has a Scottish branch at 48
Georges road, Glasgow, where also the Vega
line is carried. The folder gives illustrations
of these instruments with their prices and the
text bespeaks their praises, both as producers
of music and their artistic worth.
Army Bands Like 'Em
BOSTON, MASS., October 17.—As an indication
of the change in fashions in clarinets, officials
of the Cundy-Bettoney Co. point out that three
of the crack bands of the United States Service
arc now fully equipped with Cundy-Bettoney
Silva-Bet clarinets. These bands are the United
States Army Band, the United States Navy
Band and the Army School Band.

other feature of this catalog o^interest to music
dealers and musicians is that it contains a list-
ing of an entire line of sixty-four different
models in the clarinet field .alone.
Nine Silva-Bet metal clarinets are pictured
and described in the catalog, in three finishes,
silver plated, gold plated with satin finish and
gold plated with burnished finish. The Silva-
Bet is made of seamless tubing with inside
measurements identical with those of .wood
clarinets. The mouthpiece socket is the same
size as in the wood clarinet, making it possible
to use any mouthpiece suitable to standard
clarinets on the instrument. The catalog speaks
of the fact that since the introduction of Silva-

universal while they were regarded unfavori*
ably fifteen years ago.
The history of the Cundy-Bettoney Co.,
which has done such splendid pioneering in thft
metal clarinet field, is .interesting. W. H,
(undy, an Englishman, came to Boston in 1855
and began business in imported wood-wind f**^
struments. Harry Bettoney, the present head of
the company, also an English musician, came
here in 1893 and performed for many years as a
clarinetist and director with many of Boston's
leading musical organizations.
He associated himself with the Cundy-Bet-
toney Co. many years ago and soon
realized his ambition to have America supply its
