with talks by two guest speakers, Ronald Heale,
of Heale & Co., Ltd., piano manufacturer in Syd-
ney, Australia, and William Schaff, president of
the Schaff Piano String Co., Chicago and New
York.
E. M. Reulbach, secretary of the dub, an-
nounced that the New York piano superintend-
ents were cordially invited to attend the meeting
of the wood industries division of the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers to be held Fri-
day evening, February 25, in the Engineering
Society's Building, 29 West Thirty-ninth street,
at 8 o'clock p. m.
Mr. Beale was then introduced and spoke ex-
temporaneously on the comparison between
American and Australian piano making. He ex-
plained that his factory, which has an annual
production of approximately 5,000 instruments,
had difficulty, for many years, in getting suitable
lumber for making wrest planks. As a result
the plant has succeeded in developing the chief
plank, made of iron, which is probably the chief
pcan designs.
In general, Mr. Beale asserted, the piano busi-
ness in Australia is good, but being a modern,
growing country, the industry is affected by
many outside influences, such as the radio, elec-
tric refrigerators and other household appliances.
Most of the population, which now comprises
about seven million people, live in private
homes, but modern apartments with their some-
what cramped living rooms are beginning to ap-
pear in the larger cities. The demand for the
expensive types of American-made reproducing
pianos, such as the Ampico, is strong, and Mr.
Healc sees a rich export field for these.
