ducing the wormholes is not disturbing of it-
self. In fact, we are told that the holes en-
hance the value of the timber as corewood, by
becoming filled with glue and holding together
a bit more firmly than if the surface were
smooth.
In spite of this advantage of wormy chestnut,
it is well to bear in mind that if the "blight" is
permitted to continue its work of partial de-
struction of chestnut, there will come a time,
not so far off, when all of this wood will be
mutilated beyond the point of commercial value.
The Department of Agriculture is therefore tak-
ing steps to replace the domestic stand with a
blight-resistant chestnut, which will serve all
the uses of the native wood. In a bulletin on
its progress in discovering such a chestnut the
Department of Agriculture states the follow-
ing:
"The widespread destruction of chestnut in
the United States by the chestnut blight has
stimulated efforts to find blight-resistant species,
both native and foreign, for partly replacing
native chestnut is put makes it very difficult to
find a tree that will adequately take its place.
Great interest has developed in substitutes for
our native chestnut that may prove blight-re-
sistant and be utilized in breeding work, look-
ing to the supplying of timber, tannin and food.
"Representatives of the department have
searched for blight-resistant species of chestnut
in China, Japan, Siam, India and other foreign
counties. Department Circular 383-C, 'The
Search in Foreign Countries for Blight-Re-
sistant Chestnuts and Related Tree Crops, 1 has
been issued by the department to make available
data bearing on the species of chestnut or re-
lated trees already introduced."
