era. Not the best scale ever made indeed will
take the place of skilled practical work in the
factory. The. factory expert has the vital task
of reducing the designs furnished him to prac-
tical work in pianos; but the point is that a
scientifically designed scale facilitates every
process and every operation, provides the needed
foundation for large production without loss of
quality, promotes uniformity of quality and
helps to simplify and cut the cost of every op-
eration from the mill room to the tone regulat-
ing bench.

It would be ungracious to conclude this short
description of a practical and scientific tone
workshop without repeating the thanks already
expressed to John C. Deagan, to Steinway &
Sons and to Carl Williams for their practical
co-operation with me in making possible the
adequate equipment illustrated on page 32. The
apparatus placed at my disposal is of priceless
value. Those who say that there are no lovers
of tone science in the music industries are evi-
dently exaggerating, for here is proof to the
contrary.
Incidentally, all this may (and I hope will)
do something to dispel the somewhat common
idea that a man who writes on technical sub-
jects is necessarily not "practical."
