OTAGRD presentations in photoplay houses
^ throughout the country have reached a posi-
tion where such material is now often prepared
on a national scale. It is these elaborate pres-
entations and the booking of prominent vaude-
ville acts which are not only keeping the photo-
play houses of America jammed with customers
but are the means of making serious inroads on
the popularity and success of vaudeville houses.
The Sam Fox Publishing Co., of New York
and Cleveland, O., noting the trend of events,
now releases a new edition of publications
known as the "Fox Presentation Series." This
series is arranged for orchestra by J. S. Zamec
nik and are "idealized transcriptions for theatre
presentation, concert and dance." These, tran-
scriptions are in two parts, Part I in concert
form with an appropriate ending here or with-
out interruption, then proceed with Part IT.
This is said to be an advanced step in music
publications of this caliber and should be a
welcome addition to the libraries of photoplay
copy of "Neapolitan Nights." This is the be-
ginning of a new national exploitation drive on
"Neapolitan Nights" and "Indian Dawn." Both
houses and others interested in modernized but of these numbers have already appeared on
practically all the talking machine records and
elaborate material.
The first of these numbers to appear in the player rolls and have previously been presented
in an energetic way in other channels.

Book Serves a Work for Students Introduc-
tory to Harmony—Issued by Ditson Co.
The Oliver Ditson Co., of Boston, Mass., has
just issued a new book of handy size entitled
"Melody Writing and Ear Training," by
Frances M. Dickey, assistant professor of music,
University of Washington, Seattle, who is also
the author of "Early History of Public School
Music in America," in collaboration with Eilene
French, instructor of music, also of the Uni-
versity of Washington.
The book is intended for students of music in
colleges, universities or in high schools as prep-
aration or introduction to the study of harmony.
The contents, which are illustrated with the-
matic diagrams, cover thoroughly the subject
treated in all of its phases, closing in each in-
stance with an assignment for the proper con-
ception and development of the knowledge pre-
sented. The book is noticeable for its clarity,
constructiveness and scope. It should prove of
valuable aid to students and to teachers.

In an interview given in Chicago, Otto H.
Kahn, noted banker and patron of the arts, ex-
pressed the belief that the so-called jazzing of
the classics was proving an important factor in
making America acquainted with the classical
originals.
"The Wagnerian operas were popular in New
York last Winter, and one reason was that 'The
Ride of the Valkyries' was played everywhere
by jazz orchestias," said Mr. Kahn, who came
from New York for yesterday's premiere of the
season at Ravinia, Chicago's novel woodland
opera house. "All the classics have been jazzed
by now, and it has resulted in getting the people
interested in hearing them in their original
form."
