Labor Upheaval in Great Britain Creates Feel-
ing of Uncertainty in American Market
Some concern over the effect of the general
strike in Great Britain on the price of pig iron
has been felt by American founders and plate-
makers within the last fortnight. The price sit-
uation for pig iron in the East is uncertain.

point, but some regard this as a mere gesture
of firmness. Eastern Pennsylvania iron sold
as low as $21 per ton, furnace, though the sale
is alleged to have been made stealthily. An-
other big deal of 1,600 tons of foreign iron
was made at less than $20 f. o. b. cars at Phila-
delphia, going through at the time when pig
iron sellers were maintaining that distress iron
was about sold out.
Shipments of iron from Great Britain will
doubtless be curtailed if the strike is prolonged.
Nearly 55,000 tons of British iron came to the
United States during the first quarter of the
year. There is considerable British iron still
due on contracts, which may be held up pending
the settlement. As a result of these conditions
an uneasy domestic market is prevailing
throughout the country.
that the minimum rate for transporting lumber
from Pacific ports to the Atlantic shall be $12
per thousand feet and that this rate shall be
maintained for the balance of the 1926 season.
The operators had an agreement of a $15 rate
several weeks ago, but, when offerings became
scarce, cutting began and the rate dropped to
$12.
