Reed Promotes Massed
Dance Orchestra Concert
Austin Music House Behind Unique Event in
That City—Four Orchestras to Participate
AUSTIN, TEX., October 20.—A popular massed
orchestra concert, the first of its kind ever to
be held in this city, will be presented by four
of the city's leading dance orchestras Novem-
ber 2, at the Majestic Theatre. It is arranged
by John S. Caldwell, manager of the small goods
department of the J. R. Reed Music Co. All of
the musicians are members of the local musi-
cians' union and the combined instrumentation
will total thirty-five pieces.
The concert will be a unique affair. First, each
of the four orchestras will play two popular
numbers and then the massed orchestras, under
the direction of Steve Gardner, will play four
selections. Also there will be a program of
novelty numbers, including a saxophone sextet
and a stringed sextet.
The four orchestras participating in the pro-
gram are Steve Gardner's Orchestra, the Texas
Collegians, Fatz Obernier's Orchestra and Har-
old Caldwell's Orchestra. Rehearsals for the
concert are now being held at frequent inter-
vals at the Reed music store.
"We are spending a great deal of time and
money to put this concert on," declared Mr.
Caldwell to a representative of The Review,
"and we believe that it will be well received by
the public in this city. It should be a mighty
big thing for music here. The Reed Music Co.
is printing and distributing 5,000 programs as
well as 5,000 explantory letters telling all about
the concert, which are being distributed broad-
cast to the public in Austin. All of the receipts
will go to the boys themselves and the only
benefit that the Reed company will receive will
be the advertising for the Martin Handcraft
band instruments, for which we are South
Texas distributors."
An intensive advertising and publicity cam-

paign will be started to educate the music
lovers of Austin regarding the performance of
this unusual group of musicians. This same
sort of thing can easily be done by other dealers
in other cities and it will serve to concentrate
public attention on the high type of popular
music now being served up by the dance or-
chestras. It should do a great deal of good in
stimulating the sale of band and orchestra in-
struments.
