CHICAGO, III., January 19.—Much progress has
been made by Armour & Co., in their musical
instrument string department during the past
year, according to H. O. Gable, manager of this
department, who reports that a large number of
new agencies for the various Armour gut
strings have been established with music dealers
during the past twelve months.
Dealers seem to appreciate the fact that the
Armour plant offers tremendous facilities for a
source of supply of fresh gut, according to Mr.
Gable, a factor which plays a great part in
bringing out the proper tonal qualities as well
as durability in the opinion of musical author-
ities. The ability to get gut strings of guar-
anteed freshness rather than those made of
pickeled and salted gut is given as the reason
actuating many dealers in stocking the Armour
strings.
Another factor to which Mr. Gable attributes
the progress made by the Armour strings with
music dealers throughout the country is the
new sales-stimulating display case for strings
which Armour & Co. are now supplying their
dealers as a sales aid. This compact and serv-
iceable case acts as a good advertising medium
and enables the dealer to serve his trade more
conveniently. A number of dealers have written
in enthusiastically praising the Armour string
display case.

as usual, to include fifty per cent more space.
The latest feature is a department for band and
orchestral music, which is to be complete, in-
cluding standard and popular music for all or-
chestral and band instruments. This depart-
ment is under the direction of J. E. Agnew,
formerly of Des Moines, la., where he main-
tained his own music publishing business for
twenty-nine years. Mr. Agnew will continue
his publishing business here as well as managing
the music department for the Crawford-Rutan
Co.
The repair department of the Crawford-Rutan
Co. is an excellent paying feature of the busi-
ness. The Musical Booster, the sixteen-page
house organ, is growing rapidly and has proven
to be very much of a success in increasing the
numbers of customers.
Prospects for Spring trade, according to the
Crawford-Rutan Co., are mighty good, being
better than usual for this time of the year.
With the beginning of the necessary prepara-
tion for the Summer concert season business
should assume greater proportions than hereto-
fore; from observations on business conditions
of this year, the Spring and Summer seasons
are expected to be good.

SAN FRANCISCO, CAL., January 18.—The First
Congregational Church has just started a con-
gregational band equipped with Conn instru-
ments. With the exception of the conductor
and the concertmaster, all the players are ama-
teurs and most of them are parishioners. The
director is Lieutenant McAbee, U. S. A. W.
Hooper, one of John Philip Sousa's first bands-
men, is to play the Conn Sousaphone in the
newly organized band, which has about a hun-
dred pieces. The band will play in Union
Square every Sunday, prior to Church services
at the First Congregational Church. It will
march to the sacred edifice in time for services.
Daniel Miller, president of the Conn San Fran-
cisco Co., has been taking a keen interest in
the organization of the band.
Martins Are in Demand
SCHENECTADY, N. Y., January 16.—An excellent
business in Martin band instruments was done
during the Christmas holidays by Cluett &
Sons, local representatives of the Martin Band
Instrument Co., Elkhart, Ind. This house has
sold Martin instruments to a number of bands
which it has organized in local schools and
churches.
Tom Brown Increases Capital
CHICAGO, I I I . , January 16.—The Tom Brown
Music Co., 17 West Lake street, this city, it is
announced has increased stock from $100,000
to $150,000.
