THE
Successful Band Contest
for Schools Held in Akron
Fostoria High School Band Again Wins First
Prize in State Competition From Among
Twenty Other Competing Bands
AKRON, O., May 25.—Fostoria High School
again won the State school band concert, it
was announced here Friday, at the end of a
two-day music meet at the armory. The Fos-
toria school thus retains the loving cup it won
in last year's competition.
West High School of Akron took second
prize in the Class A or high school classification.
Kenneth Hoffman, Mansfield High clarinet
player, received the grand prize loving cup for
being the best soloist. Arvine Harrold of Fos-
toria won second place with a cornet solo.
The most picturesque event of the two-day
meet which brought to Akron 1000 Ohio music
lovers was the grand parade of all the tw-enty-
one bands in the contest through the downtown

streets Friday afternoon. All were in full uni-
form with drum majors "strutting their stuff"
in the lead. It was the biggest music event
ever held in Akron. Arrangements were made
by Miss Nellie Glover, director of music in
Akron schools.
Judges were Albert Sweet of Chicago; W. F.
Robinson of Toronto, Ont., and A. A. Harding
of Urbana, 111.
Akron retail music merchants co-operated
with the committees in charge of arrangements
for the two-day meeting and donated all the
prizes for the various winners. Special window
displays were offered by dealers in musical mer-
chandise and some unusually attractive displays
of band instrument windows were offered by
Rudicks, Ed Freds and Kratz Piano Co.
According to all reports the widespread inter-
est in the band contest has led directly to in-
creased sales throughout the entire territory
covered by the organizations that took part in
it.
Rands increase as competitive spirit is
stimulated by such events, as has always been
found.

Brass Instrument Groups
Popular in Wilkes-Barre
Polyhymnia Brass Quartet and Ludwig-Conn
Saxophone Band Make Strong Appeal
Through Their Local Concerts
WILKES-BARRE, PA., May .1—Local music
lovers have evinced a good deal of interest in
the work of the Polyhymnia Brass Quartet, an
organization that has been playing together for
some time now through the efforts of the Lud-
wig & Co. music store here. The musicians
have achieved a wonderful blending of two
cornets, a trombone and a euphonium and their
work is stimulating the demand for brass in-
struments in this section.
Another musical organization that is popular
here is the Ludwig-Conn saxophone band, said
to be the largest saxophone band in the world
and equipped with Conn instruments, which,
gave a concert in Irem temple recently. A.'bra-
ham Small is conductor of both organizations
and is Wilkes-Barre's most prominent band in-
strument instructor, co-operating with l.udwig
& Co. in stimulating interest
