Kalamazoo Band Makes
Big Hit in Boston
Boy Scout Organization of Michigan City One
of Leading Features of Grand Army Week in
That City
BOSTON, MASS., August 22.—The Kalamazoo Boy
Scout Band and its Fife and Drum Corps, two
distinct units, the pride of that city, were in
Boston during Grand Army week and made a
big hit everywhere. They were enabled to come
here through the public-spirited people of Kala-
mazoo who contributed enough to defray their
expenses. The band played at the Charlestown
Navy Yard as well as other places. All the
members play Conn and Buescher instruments,
about equally divided.
Three of the boys in the outfit, Scout Master
Peter Norg, Ward Sanford and "Tuffy" Austin,
were members of the musical club of the Cen-
tral High School in Kalamazoo when C. V. But-
telman, manager of Jacobs' Orchestra Monthly,
was a member of the musical faculty, so the
boys naturally paid him a visit at the offices
of Walter Jacobs, Inc. The band members also
paid a visit to the Carl Fischer, Inc., Boylston
street establishment.
Boys' bands are becoming increasingly numer-
ous throughout the country and are playing a
greater part than ever in the development of
musical taste among the youth of the nation.
They are among the best means of publicity
the merchant has.
G. Sonfield Expected Back
Announcement was made Tuesday by officials
of C. Bruno & Son, Inc., wholesalers of musical
merchandise, New York, that Charles Sonfield,
general sales manager of the musical merchan-
dise department, is expected back this week from
Europe. Mr. Sonfield has spent several months
in Europe studying conditions and arranging
for shipments of merchandise. He is making
the return trip on the S. S. "Berengaria," which
is also bringing the Prince of Wales, and will
land next week.
