Benedictine Monk Guido, First to Write Music,
Receives Many Honors in France and
Central Germany.
Some idea of the variety and high quality of
the material available in the famous Witmark
Iilack and White Series of songs and ballads
may be derived from a perusal of a partial list
of grand opera singers who have sung or are
singing various songs included in this well-
known catalog. The list embraces many of
the foremost singers who have sung with the
Metropolitan in New York and the Chicago
Opera Co., and the composers of the songs
thus honored include Victor Herbert, Harvey
Worthington Loomis, Ernest R. Ball, Arthur
A. Penn, Frederick W. Vanderpool, Frank H.
Grey and others. Among the Victor Herbert
songs, "Gypsy Love Song" and "Kiss Me
Again" have been featured many times. Some
of the operatic stars who comprise the list are
Mine. Schumann-Heink, Mme. Pasquali, John
McCormack, Henri Scott, Orville Harrold,
Eleanore de Cisneros, Rafaels Diaz, Cyrena
Van Gordon, Clarence Whitehill, Reinald Wer-
renrath, Frances Alda, Martinelli, Gigli, Bonci,
Dorothy Jardon, Marguerite Matzenauer, Paul
Althouse, Marjorie Maxwell, Marie Sundelius,
Sophie Braslav, Rosa Ponselle, Cammella Pon-
selle, Edward Johnson and George Meader.
Much honor was done this year by musical
organizations in both France and Central Ger-
many to the memory of the Benedictine Monk
Guido. Guido first conceived a method of musi-
cal notation.
Before Guido wrote music there was no way
for putting melodies into circulation other than
transmitting them from person to person by
humming or whistling. The name of a creator
of a melody was soon forgotten and when new
tunes were heard old ones were discarded and
heard no more.
The method at first employed by Guido in
transcribing music was different from that used
today. Instead of having five horizontal lines
with notes in spaces between them as well as
on them, he used four lines with notes only in
the spaces.
At that time the making of a manuscript of
music was an art, for not only were notes
placed for practical purposes, but they served
a decorative purpose as well. There was a wide
variety in the colors and the shapes of the
notes for the various spaces, and other indica-
tions that were necessary were made to please
the eye as well as inform the brain.
Composers then did not make the copies of
their compositions which were on public dis-
play. Professional manuscript artists under-
took the task of providing copies which would
draw attention from the composers' crude out-
lines. It was in the monasteries that the finer
manuscripts were made on heavy, enduring
parchment by men who toiled untiringly, work-
ing sometimes for days on a single page of
the music.
The F. & W. Grand Store, Inc., recently
opened a new retail establishment at 101 East
Water street, Elmira, N. Y. Two of the fea-
tures of the new store will be a sheet music
and a radio department.

been associated with the organization since
August last and his advancement is in recog-
nition of meritorious service. Before joining
Clarke & Leslie Songs, Inc., Mr. Rockwell was
in charge of the band and orchestra depart-
ment of M. Witmark & Sons.
The firm is at present working on the novelty
comedy song "Oh! How I Love My Darling"
and a new type ballad of the blues order called
"I'll Take Her Back If She Wants To Come

the Gene Rodemich Orchestra, looks after the

"China Rose" to Open
John Cort's new musical production "China
Rose" is booked for a New York opening at
the Cort Theatre during the Christmas season.
The new piece is by Harry Cort and George
E. Stoddard with music by A. Baldwin Sloane.
The music will be published by M. Witmark
& Sons.
The American Flag Association, of which the
president is the Honorary Executive, has chosen
Nat Martin and His Four Marx Bros. Or-
chestra as the musical combination to head the
drive for funds in New York in behalf of the
proposed monument to be erected in Washing-
ton, D. C.
