able them to execute and master, with under-
standing, assurance and ease, tfre brilliant florid
passages and flourishes which make up the old
Italian aria. If the student masters all this book
teaches he will be able to handle the best classi-
cal and modern songs in an intelligent, artistic
and satisfactory manner.
Here is another evidence that the McKinley
Music Co. is an acknowledged "leader" in ideas
that will make their already "World-Famous
Edition" still more useful and valuable. All of
their standard songs have been analyzed with
regard to vocal technique and under the im-
portant classifications, such as legato, staccato,
intervals, turns, trills, acciaccaturas, syncopation,
accents, swells, etc., will be shown a list of such
songs as illustrate these points.
Nearly all easy violin music is written in easy
keys, such as C, G, D, A, etc., so as to make
frequent use of the open string. On the theory
that more players would use the hardeT keys
if the music written in them were easier, Stur-
kow Ryder has written a book entitled "Twelve
Dances for Violin and Piano in All the Major
Keys," which has just been published by the
McKinley Music Co. The first six dances (Alle-
mande, Courante, Gavotte, Gigue, Minuet and
Sarabande) are patterned after classic forms,
while the last six (March, Mazurka, Polka,
Polonaise, Tarantela and Waltz) are more mod-
ern. The melodies are delightfully fresh, yet
easy to play, and have evoked strong testi-
monials from such authorities as Felix Borow-
sky, president of Chicago Musical College;
Richard Czerwonky, head of violin department,
Bush Conservatory, Chicago; F. A. Biedelman,
theorist and teacher of Harmony, University of
North Dakota, Grand Forks; Jesse de Vore,
head of violin department, Jacksonville (111.)
