MUSIC TRADE REVIEW
to the brand of music which has attracted so
many of the people of Los Angeles and the
movie colony of Hollywood.
A particularly interesting feature of the pro-
gram was the introduction of a beautiful new
ballad, "Rain," written by Mrs. Vera Gay, tal-
ented wife of Mr. Gay, and a member of his
tioupe. Members of the Chicago Piano Club
received this number with great applause and
the prediction was made that it is destined for
a big run. The selection was rendered by
Madame Paula Dohrmann, one of Los Angeles'
leading sopranos. Mr. Gay himself, with a part
of his trouble, rendered a number of selections
upon this occasion.

During the week of May 5 a series of hearings
occurred before a Congressional Committee in
Washington on the proposed amendment of
Representative Newton to the present Copy-
right Law. Nathan Burkan, E. C. Mills, Gene
Ruck, Victor Herbert, John Philip Sousa, Silvio
Hein and a number of others appeared to pre-
sent the case of the American Society of Com-
posers, Authors & Publishers. The burden of
the fight was assumed by Nathan Burkan, the
attorney for the Society, and E. C. Mills, of the
Administrative Committee.
Gene Buck, the
president, also presented some able arguments.
During the stay of the songwriters in Wash-
ington a show was put on at the National Press
Club. This was attended by newspaper men
from all over the country and a number of Sen-
ators and Representatives.
While hearings had previously been held on
Senator Dill's Bill in the Senate which has simi-
lar purport to the Newton amendment, it is
not thought that either of the hearings will re-
sult in other than delay by the present session
of Congress.
Other members of the Society who were in
attendance at the committee hearing were
Jerome Kern, Earl Carroll, Harry Archer,
Charles K. Harris, William Jerome, Harry Von
Tilzer, Lou Breau, Charles Tobias, Milton Ager
and Jack Yellen.

"Charleston Cabin" Popular
"Charleston Cabin," a fox-trot published by
the Edward B. Marks Music Co., is being used
by Jan Garber and His Garber Davis Orchestra,
by Henry Berchman's Symphonique Dance Or-
chestra, now appearing on the Keith Vaudeville
Circuit, and a number of other leading musical
combinations. This number was originally in-
troduced by "Whitey" Kaufman's Original
Pennsylvania Serenaders, who also recorded it
for Victor records. The number finds favor
with dancers everywhere.
Yorke Leaves Witmark
H. Emerson Yorke, who for the past several
years has been in charge of the mechanical re-
production department for M. Witmark & Sons,
severed his connections with that concern on
Saturday of last week. Mr. Yorke, before enter-
ing the music publishing field, was in the the-
atrical business and it is understood that he is
to renew his activities there. He has a host of
friends in the music publishing, talking machine
record and player roll trade, all of whom wish
him success in his coming activities.
Takes Cluett Department
ALBANY, N. Y., May 10.—The sheet music de-
partment of the Cluett & Sons store, controlled
for the last few years by G. Schirmer, Inc., has
now passed into the hands of L. J. Tomasselli,
who is the manager for the Schirmer house in
this city. There are to be no changes in the
department under the new ownership.
"Monte Carlo Moon," an unusually beautiful
fox-trot dance melody, has been acquired by
Jack Mills, Inc., music publisher.
