in the past fourteen years, has amounted to, I
should say, offhand, to nearly a half million
dollars. As said in the first place, when you
asked the question: 'Does advertising pay?' I
answer irrevocably—I should say so!"
The Century's plan of marketing its goods,
its advertising campaigns, and its dealer hook-
ups cannot, of course, be used in a similar man-
ner by the average retailer. Its style of adver-
tising copy in national magazines and the appeal
to the consumer's interest, however, are worthy
of note. The circular matter, thematic catalogs
and similar publications can also be used as a
style for enlarging the dealer's mail order busi-
ness. Aside from that the various angles that
must be covered and which deserve attention
of primary importance is the fact that it pays
to advertise. All publicity appeals for building
up a mail order business are advertising. The
mere writing of a letter to a possible consumer
is a form of advertising. There are wide possi-
bilities in increasing retail business through the
mail. It requires thought and attention but
many of the methods can be used by retail sheet
music dealers.
Phil Ponce in West
Phil Ponce, president of the Philip Ponce
Publications, whose main offices are at 1658
Broadway, New York City, is now in the
Middle West arranging a campaign in the
larger cities on a new number entitled "Sneeze."
The New York offices are also making a fea-
ture of this song. Vaudeville performers have
shown favor to the number and it is being- pro-
grammed frequently.
Other Ponce numbers
tiow in the active catalog of the company are
"Who's It, Huh 5 ", '"tub Off Your Wrinkles
With a Smile," and "It's Men Like You Make
Girls Like Me."

TORONTO, CAN.. March 2.7.—Cordon V. Thomp-
son, general manager of Leo Feist, Ltd., was
in New York recently attending the annual
meeting of his firm. The company reported a
splendid year and Mr. Thompson brought home
a generous portion of the profits, which was
turned over to the employes in the form of
bonuses.
The Capitol Music Publishing Co., Ottawa,
Ont., announces the release of its first song, a
fox-trot entitled "Sweet Caroline." Arrange-
ments have been made to broadcast and plug
all Capitol releases. The next number shortly
to be released is a fox-trot song entitled
"Oriental Moonlight." Orchestration Selling
Service, Broadway, New York, will look after
the orchestration selling while negotiations ar.
now in progress with one of the largest New
York music firms to take over the selling agency
for the United States.
Holmes R. Maddock, vice-president of Wlialey
Royce, Ltd., recently returned to Toronto head-
quarters after an absence from the city of six
weeks, where he was holidaying in the Southern
and Western States and Mexico. Through the

Quile a number of songwriters and others
identified with song-making are to be found
each afternoon on the handball court in the
gym of the Friars' Club. "Handballitis" is the
cause of it, the writers and publishers having
become addicted to handball playing to such
an extent that it has become a craze among
them.
Jules C. Rosenthal, general manager of the
American Society of Composers, Authors and
Publishers, is generally recognized as the champ
among the music men, with Milton Ager, the
popular composer, also among the top-notchers.
Harry Akst is probably next in order, with Dan
Winkler, New York manager for Forster;
Walter Douglas, of Waterson, Berlin & Snyder;
Dick Powers, of Sherman, Clay & Co., pretty
closely bunched.
Benny Davis and Jack Ycllen are said to
be having quite a time of it dodging the cellar
position in the ratings. At present Davis seems
to be having quite an edge and Yellen seems
to be quite reconciled to the distinction of being
the "world's worst" handball player—except
when Phil Kornheiser is around.
