REVIEW
CHICAGO, ILL., November 24.-Several leading
roll manufacturers, in the merchandising of
their product, have attempted to increase in
terest i'n the player-piano. It is noteworthy to
find that the same co-operatio n has been ex
tended by a manufacturer of player-pianos in
preparing a booklet ca lcu late d to stimulate in
terest in the best player-piano rolls and , ulti
mately, ge t the public to build up a good library
of mu sic.
The GulbralTsen-Dickinson Co. has ju st issued
the th ird editio n of a sixt y-four-p age de lu xe
vo lum e, entitled "Good Times With You r Gul
bransen," fox its dealers. It is the finest of
the three editions and is bound in imitation
le ather cover, artistically de s igned, printed in
black and gold and embossed. It has a four
color frontispiece, with new half-tone illustra
tions throughout which pointedly em ph asize
th e appea l of the copy.
The primary pur po se is to acqua int player
piano owners with the var iety of music avail
able to them. Only the best mu sic has been
chosen without discrimination of the manufac
tu rers of the rolls when the rolls are deemed
te merit the selection. In li sti ng the rolls prac
ticall y all th e lead in g music roll manufacturers
are represented. Another pur pose of the book
let is to increase the public's appreciation of
good music, which has been attempte d b y giv
ing brief but intpre st ing su ggestions on what
con, titut es that.
It is 'Obvious how mu c h good such a book
will do, for player-pi a no own e rs, especially own
e rs of Gulbransen registering pianes who are
furnished with in~trucJion rells, and indirectly
for t he music industry, by sho, ving the people
how to us e their instruments and stimulating
t he de mand for good music. The Gulbransen
does not deal in player rolls and has no finan
cial or friendly interest in any particular player
ro ll concern, but simply desires te have Gul
bansen owners get the most and best serv ic e
out of their instruments.
"Goo d Times Wi t h Your Gulbransen," in fact.
represents one of the mest unselfish pits of
propaganda ever prepared by a piano manufac
turer. It ha s be en comp il ed by a rtist associ
ates of the company, including' Anne Sh aw
Faulkner, John Martin and others unpr ejud iced
who are musical and playe r-piano aut horiti es .
As the book it self says: "vVe de not want
to s ee you r roll librar y limit ed to th e produc
tion s of anyone or two roll makers. That
would b e like subsc ribin g to only o ne maga
zine or reading only one publisher's books.
"And the re is a furth er reason why you find
th e roll numbers of so many different makers
give n in this book. No tw o 'pianisb ev er play
the same composition the same way.

roll. We have endeavored to select that roll
for you in the case of nearly 1,000 composi
tions."
The selec t ions arc all classified under sepa
rate headings and the name 'Of the roll, the
manufacturer and the number is given. For in
stance; und'e r the title "Gulbransen Music fo-r
Dan cin g Parties," which, by the way, lik e all
the sections of th e book, is appropriately illus
trated, on e-s teps, waltzes, fox-trots, old-fash
ioned dances , marche~, etc., are list.ed; while
nnder the title "Po pular Entertainments an d
Parti es" rolls 'Of musical readings, va ud evi lle
stunts , phonograph and Gulb rans en duets are
li ste d; under the title "Songs for Little Folks"
g-ame songs, Mother Goos e rhymes and s lum
