Dubin had been gass ed in action durin g the
Vvorld V:ar, following: which h e spent seve n
months in ho spital s in Fran ce and the l Tnite d
States recoverin g from shell shock, which has
never totall y disappeared. Whil e away h e suf­
fered from a loss of memory and und e r th a t
co nditi o n signed as a member of th e cre w of
the S.S. "Genera l Botha," a freight e r plying
be tween New York and South Africa.
According to his story, upon his trip he
landed in Capetown, South Afr ica, where he
wa s attracted by th e sounds of music played by
a hot e l orc hestra. The soothing strains of th e
mu sic brou ght bac k hi s memory a nd, st ill da ze d,
he hurried to his ship and made a rr angemen ts
to sec ur e immediate passage to the enited
S tat es, arriving in Boston last week ,
Dubin is the wr iter of "All the World 'W ill
Be J ea lous of Me, " "Crooning" and " Who 'll
Take th e Place of M a ry," as well as o the r suc­
cesse s. Just before his abrupt d eparture he
joined the staff of Jack Mills, Inc ., as special
materi a l writer, and placed in that catalo" the
song "Just a Girl That Men Forget," which,
upon his return, he finds to be one of the most
successfu l of current, popular hits _
