E. C. MILLS RETURNING FROM TRIP
New Owner to Imme While Away, Held Series of Conferences With
Motion Picture Theatre Owners
Advertising Material Covering Every Channel Now in Course of Preparation
Irving Berlin, Inc., has purchased from James
Brockman the new song-, entit led "You Darling,
·You." It has been said in publishing circles
that there were several bidder s for the number,
but the e nthusiasm shown and the appropria
tion planned for publi city by the Berlin organ
ization made Mr. Brockman. decide in favor of
placing it in its hands.
The band and orchestra, professional a nd sales
departments of the Berlin Co. state it is a song
of real merit and expec t, with the exploitation
campaign now bein g arranged, to make it one
of the best known popular airs of the current
sea son.
The campaign will not only invol ve the ac
tivities of the above departments, but the vari
ous branch offi ces of the Berlin Co. will aid
in giving "You Darling, You" national publicity.
Orchestrations are now being forwarded to all
parts of th e country a nd it is expec ted in a very
,hort space of time to havt the campaign well
under way.
'
Special advertising material, covering ever}
channel of s heet music publicity, has been
plann ed.
This will include consumer litna
.ature, window str ips, hanger s, streamers and
olhtr effective matter. Many vaudevillians will
be induc ed to sing the song and, with the aid
of dance orchestras, motion picture hou!' es,
cabarets and other .:ntertainment rno rts, a re
sponse to the number· s merit is looked for
ward to shortl y.
The acceptance by Irving Berlin, Inc., of the
above song, "You Darling, You," brings to mind
a little of the earli er hi s tor y of the number.
Originally it carried an entirely different title
and was presented to the Berlin organization
for publication . Owing to the fact, ho·wever,
of the wealth of materi al then in the Berlin
catalo g, its publication was refused. Brockman,
E. C. Mills, chairman of the executive board
of the :vIusic Publishers' Protective Association
and one of th e executives of the American So
ciety of Compos ers, Authors and Publishers,
will return late next week after an extended
trip through th e Northwest, Middle \lVe s t and

though, d ec ided to make some changes and give
the song early exploitation through his own
eiIorts, with Ihe result as outlined · above.
There have been severa l instances where
song-writers hav e ca rried out some preliminary
work on numbers in which th(;y ha d the greatest
of confid ence.
