THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW

TWELVE MEHLIN & SONSJPIANOS FOR ERWIN AUDITORIUM
W. R. Murray Co. Secures Large Order for West Durham, N. C, Auditorium, Which Is Maintained
as Part of the Erwin Cotton Mills Welfare Movement—Music Courses for Employes a Feature
The Melilin piano, manufactured by Paul G.
Mehlin & Sons, West New York, N. J., was
again paid a singular tribute when it was re-
cently declared the official piano for the Erwin
Auditorium, erected by the Erwin Cotton Mills,
West Durham, N. (.'., for the use of the em-
ployes of the West Durham Cotton Mills and
Headquarters of the W. R. Murray Co.
presented to them in behalf of the mills by
W. A. Erwin, head of the-corporation.
This institution is one of the most complete
welfare projects which has ever been inaugu-
rated and part of the institution is devoted to
musical instruction. For this twelve Mehlin
pianos, mostly grands, were purchased through
the W. R. Murray Co., of Durham, N. C. These
pianos were selected after several different
makes had been carefully looked over. The
purchase of the pianos was done under the
personal direction of W. A. Erwin, whose aim
was to select instruments of the highest quality
in keeping with the ideals of the Erwin Audi-
torium, in each department of which is found
the most modern equipment.
The building, as may be seen in the accom-
panying illustration, is constructed of tapestry
brick, trimmed with limestone. It is divided
into three general departments, one for men,
one for women and the other for boys. It is
equipped with a splendid swimming pool, as
well as a gymnasium, shower baths and other
athletic equipment. Each department has read-
ing rooms, with a complete library, game rooms
and social rooms. Rack of these rooms is a
Erwin Auditorium, West Durham, N
large auditorium with a seating capacity of over
a thousand people. This is equipped with a
stage and all the settings for it. The building
is also equipped with a cafeteria restaurant.
On the second floor of the west wing, above
the boys' rooms, is located the singing room.
This room will be used also for small group
meetings. It is a small auditorium in itself and
legular music classes will be held there. Miss
Rosa Warren, also women's directress, will have
charge of the music department and important
progress is anticipated under her guidance. The
music room is one of the most attractive fea-
tures of the new building and is one of the most
important departments therein. In the east
wing on the second floor are the women's game
and rest rooms and the domestic science depart-
ment. The domestic science department, with
complete equipment, including gas ranges, will
take care of regular classes in cooking. This -
department is expected also to draw much in-
terest from the girls and women who work in
the mills.
It is in this building that the Mehlin pianos
will be used, adding materially to the complete-
ness of its equipment. It seems very fitting
that these instruments should be chosen for a
modern enterprise of this character, which has
been developed on such a large and advanced
scale. So it is with Mehlin pianos and player-
pianos, which are manufactured in accordance
with the most scientific principles, having in-
corporated in their construction many exclusive
features, which have been developed as the re-
sult of the scientific researches made by Charles
Mehlin, who is acknowledged as one of the
C, Equipped With Mehlin Pianos
most prominent technical experts in the piano
industry at the present time.
The W. R. Murray Co. is the oldest musical
house in Durham and was established in 1887.
The firm has been unusually successful and now
occupies an attractive wareroom and building,
a reproduction of which appears herewith. The
company has handled the Mehlin as a leader
for many years and its popularity has continu-
ally grown in and around Durham. Fair and
square dealing with all patrons, both large and
small, scrupulous honesty in their dealings with
the public, and "quality" rather than price have
been a few of the principles that have made for
the extraordinarily high rating that is given the
W. R. Murray Co. by the people of Durham
and community.
