HEAVY ORDERS j^OR GRAND PLATES
H. & H. Foundry & Machine Co. Report Activity
in Their Modern Piano Plate Plant
STAMFORD, CONN., May 22.—General activity is
noticeable at the plant of the H. & H. Foundry
& Machine Co., of this city. Not only are a
large number of piano plates in process, but it
was pointed out that all these plates were on
immediate order and none were being stocked.
The heaviest orders are being placed for grand
plates. .Upright plates, however, are not far
behind in volume and are increasing steadily.
The H. &. H. foundry is equipped with mod-
ern machinery. Adjoining land is owned by
the company, making further expansion possible.
Almost all the piano manufacturers served by
this firm are comparatively near and therefore
shipments are made by truck. A private dock
on the property also affords additional shipping
and receiving facilities.
Although the company will not have an ex-
hibit at the coming convention, George Cheval-
licr plans to be present to greet his many
friends throughout the trade.

R
EADERS of THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW may have the
privilege of examining, free, any of the technical books pub-
lished by Edward Lyman Bill, Inc. Each volume has been
written by William Braid White, Technical Editor of The Review.
To make these books authoritative, he has drawn not only from
his own rich and practical experience of nineteen years, first as a
tuner and later as an acoustical engineer, but also has drawn upon
the extensive resources at his command by virtue of his affiliation
with The Review.
The Edward Lyman Bill, Inc., technical library represents the
only books written in English for the men who constitute the piano
and player-piano industry of the United States. Each book covers
its respective subject clearly and completely. Each volume is the
standard work of its particular field. Every one of these books
should be in the hands of every progressive man who wants to
continue to make the American piano industry the world's leader,
both from an artistic and commercial standpoint, as it is today.
These books also should be in every factory, as well as office
and retail establishment, for they are first of all practical books, and
are real working tools for the man whose success depends so much
upon a sound fundamental knowledge of piano and player con-
struction, acoustics, etc.
Plant of George W. Moore Working Overtime to
Meet Demands for Capstan Screws
BOSTON, MASS., May 22.—The plant of George
W. Moore, in this city, manufacturer of the
well-known Moore patented capstan screw, is
working at full capacity and recently has added
night work. The business has made remarkable
strides during the past year. Not only have
standing orders been materially increased, but
additional piano manufacturers are now specify-
ing Moore capstan screws.
The new Moore capstan screw, which was
only patented last November, has been in pro-
duction for some months past. This screw is
made with only three holes instead of the
familiar four. It is reported by the officials of
the company that it has already gained con-
siderable popularity.
COST OF STEELJUKING ADVANCES
Raw Materials Entering Into Manufacture Re-
sponsible—Conditions Improved
Present prosperity in the steel industry is not
as marked as would appear on the surface.
Though steel prices have advanced about $6 per
ton on an average since March 15, the costs of
making steel have advanced about $6.50 a ton.
Theoretically, therefore, steel prices are 50 cents
behind costs. The following raw materials en-
tering steel are higher in price: Coal, coke,
pig iron, scrap and refractories. By this it must
not be inferred that conditions are no better
than two months ago. The greater volume of
business partially makes up for the lack of rela-
tive improvement in prices.

BOSTON, MASS., May 21.—The demand for wool
in the Eastern seaboard markets has been hardly
so keen, perhaps, although prices are well main-
tained. In the country the new clip continues to
move freely at prices which are slightly stronger.
The manufacturers are inclined generally to re-
sist the upward swing of prices, but are obliged to
meet the market when they buy.
At the mills there is little change, either as
regards the strike situation or the volume of
new business, except that some improvement con-
tinues to be noted in worsted goods. The trade
would be glad to see an early settlement of the
tariff, but hardly hopes for that eventuality.
