NEW EXPORT RULING
Sheet Music Exported to Canada Must Bear
American Imprint After October 1
As reported in this paper last week there was
recently passed a new Canadian Customs Act
which goes into effect on October 1. While
this act applies to all industries and affects
all products entering Canada, it might be
well, at this time, to make particular refer-
ence to its effect on sheet music. Below is an
extract from a letter forwarded by E. C. Mills,
of the Music Publishers' Protective Association,
to the members of that organization:
"Under the conditions of this act it becomes
necessary that the words 'Printed in the U. S.
A.' be imprinted upon all music shipped into
Canada on and after October 1, 1921, else such
music becomes subject to an additional duty of
10 per cent with the additional stipulation that
it will not be released from customs until it has
been so stamped as provided by the act."
The Music Publishers' Protective Association
has asked 1 for a ruling on, or an interpretation
of, this act in its application to music.
GRASPING THE OPPORTUNITY
Jack Mills, Inc., has just released a ballad
entitled "They Needed a Song Bird in Heaven"
(So God Took Caruso Away). The number

THE NATIONAL CHAIN STORE PLAN
Starr Piano Co. Makes Offer of Assistance in
Furthering Chain Store Plan
The suggestion that a national chain of stores
be operated by music publishers, which was
given consideration by the Music Publishers'
Protective Association and action on which is
being held in abeyance, received a new impetus
recently when the Starr Piano Co., manufac-
turer of Gennett records, informed E. C. Mills,
chairman of the board of executives of the
Music Publishers' Protective Association, that
it would be willing to advance a co-operative
plan where the publishers could install depart-
ments in the Starr Piano Co.'s chain of retail
stores, which now number over thirty. The
matter is being given consideration by the
association, but owing to the fact that the pub-
lishers do not care to become involved in an
exclusive distribution proposition it probably
will not be taken up. If the publishers finally
operate a chain of retail stores, the probabilities
are that they will distribute all makes of records
and rolls that have a demand.
