Summer Campaigns Help to Push Sales of

Despite the pessimistic tone heard in some
circles, the sales of popular music have decidedly
increased during recent weeks. Especially is
this true in regards to Western business, which
is showing an unusual amount of activity at the
present time.
One of the earmarks which denotes the im-
provement in the business situation is shown by
the various announcements of the publishers
during the past ten days. All of the larger
houses have inaugurated Summer advertising
campaigns and the energy being put forth by
these organizations will, no doubt, serve to fur-
ther increase the Summer sales.
• Even the publishing houses that still feel the
Summer business is far below normal are of the
opinion that the coming Fall months will bring
a new era in the music business as far as sales
are concerned. All of them are planning big
sales drives for the early months of the season
and their professional as well as their band and
orchestra departments have arranged big pub-
licity campaigns.
The July issue of Forbes Magazine, which has
The Century Music Co., the well-known pub-
just been released, carries on its front cover a lisher of the Century Edition, is just forwarding
reproduced crayon sketch of Leo Feist, the well-
known publisher. In the body of the paper,
Charles D. Isaacson, the writer on musical sub-
jects and author of "Face to Face With Great
Musicians," has an article entitled "How L,eo
Feist Built Huge Business." The article is quite
voluminous, and covers the history of the Feist
business since its infancy. A personal interview
with Leo Feist also appears and the whole is
one of the most elaborate as well as minute de-
scriptions of this successful man's career that
has ever appeared in print.
FORSTER MAKES NEW RELEASE
Forster, Music Publisher, Inc., Chicago, 111.,
has just released a new song from the pens of
Jack Yellen and Abe Olman entitled "Moon-
light in Mandalay." A big advertising cam-
paign has been arranged by the publishers in
behalf of the song.
MAKE SUMMER CAMPAIGN
During the Summer season Waterson, Berlin
& Snyder are campaigning on four songs in
their popular catalog. They are "Jean," "In
Sweet September," "So Long, Oolong" and "I
Would Love to Fall Asleep" (And Wake Up in
My Mammy's Arms).

NEW HANLEY*GOODWIN SONG
Shapiro, Bernstein & Co. have just released a
new number entitled "There's a Vacant Chair at
Home Sweet Home" (When the World Goes
Back on You). In announcing the number to
the profession, the publishers inserted state-
ments from James F. Hanley and Joe Good-
win, the writers, in which they state that the
above song is the best number they ever wrote.
The publishers also announce it is the best num-
ber they have ever published.
NEW SONG PROVING POPULAR
Van Alstyne & Curtis, a comparatively new
Chicago publishing house, of which Egbert Van
Alstyne is head, are the publishers of a new
song which is finding favor in vaudeville cir-
cles. It is called "Sweetie o' Mine," and has an
appealing melody and good lyrics.

Century Counter Display Card
to the trade a new display card to be used by
dealers on their counters. The display is most
artistic in design and is arranged in such form
that an individual copy of music can be given
preference in the rack at regular intervals.
Many dealers who have received this new dis-
play material say that it is practically a creator
ol sales and the Century Co. looks forward to
Jill of its dealers using this card to advantage.
