by Byron Mauzy in San Francisco
tre, San Francisco's leading moving picture
house, Gino Severi is the conductor of the Im-
perial orchestra and an Ampico enthusiast, and,
in conjunction with Luigi Galliana, arrange-
ments were made for the presentation of the
Ampico playing Rachmaninoff's own interpreta-
tion of his "G Minor Prelude," accompanied by
the orchestra. The whole thing was carried
out in the most thorough manner. Just previous
to the Ampico's performance a very elaborate
announcement was thrown on the screen stating
Rachmaninoff, as an invisible soloist, would play
by means of the Ampico in the Chickering; an-
nouncing also that the Ampico is a new instru-
ment which presents to the public the actual
playing of the artist as though he himself were
at the piano. The screen also announced that
the performance was given through the cour-
tesy of Byron Mauzy.
The Ampico was placed in the center of the
stage surrounded by the orchestra, and a card
sign illuminated during this feature number was
set at the side of the stage announcing the per-
formance.
A printed program for the performance was
also used and a preliminary announcement of
the event forwarded by mail to about 4,000 of
San Francisco's music lovers. A large picture of
Severi and the Ampico was prominently dis-
played in the lobby of the theatre. The per-
formance was electrifying in its effect, the au-
dience receiving it with unbridled enthusiasm.
In connection with the concert, Mr. Ratkin
of the Byron Mauzy Co. arranged a very hand-
some window display. This, together with the
newspaper publicity and the usual press notices
announcing and commenting on the event, put
this entertainment over in a most convincing
manner.
