THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW
SEPTEMBER 25, 1920
WARNING!!
Thieves and Receivers of Stolen Goods!!
In recent months there has been considerable thievery of sheet music, from establishments of
jobbers, printers and publishers. In the main this has been by irresponsible boys, tempted by
the knowledge that they could dispose of a few hundred copies of ruling hits, for cash, to the occa-
sional dealer who does not look closely to the source from which he secures his supply—provid-
ing the price is "interesting."
A number of guilty youths have been forgiven—prosecution abandoned, because we believe they
will now "turn to the right."
Necessarily, we could not prosecute the receivers of the stolen goods, without also prosecuting
those guilty of theft.
This notice is a WARNING that hereafter, in every such case, we will prosecute to the full limit
of the law, both the thief and the receiver of the stolen goods, regardless of the standing or pres-
tige of either or both.
Counterfeiters and Sellers of Counterfeited Music!!
There.is now being offered to dealers in a certain section, a hit song which is a counterfeit edi-
tion. The Federal Criminal Statutes cover this form of law-breaking, and the penalties are
severe, for the printer, engraver, distributor and final seller of the counterfeit.
TAKE NOTICE that this Association will prosecute, to the full legal limit, every person or firm
involved in the manufacture or sale of a counterfeited edition.
$ 1 ,OOO
REWARD!!
$1,000
A reward of ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS will be paid for information and evidence leading to
the arrest and conviction of persons or firms guilty of knowingly receiving, buying or selling,
stolen or counterfeited music of any member of this Association.
CAUTION!!
TO THE DEALER: If music is offered you at prices lower than those prevailing with estab-
lished jobbing and publishing concerns, satisfy yourself of the legitimacy of the source from
which it is offered, BEFORE BUYING, and if you have any occasion to suspect irregularity, wire
at our expense and an immediate investigation will be instituted. The dealer who buys his
music from established concerns must have protection against the one who is willing to be party
to a criminal transaction, if necessary, in order to "get a price."
