The practice of the Oliver Ditson Co., Boston,
in issuing a monthly novelty list in two forms,
one for the general public and one for the spe-
cial use of dealers, has proven a distinct success.
The lists are very complete and give just the
information that is desired regarding the new
numbers, all carefully classified. Each list is
prefaced with some interesting information re-
garding musical celebrities, the February bulle-
tin featuring Cecil Burleigh and calling atten-
tion to other noted composers and artists. The
songs listed in the February bulletin include
numbers of Caccini-Floridia, G. W. Chadwick,
William Arms Fisher, Cecil Forsyth, Frank St.
Ledger, Lieut. Gitz-Rice and others. There
are also listed selections for the piano and other
instruments, cantatas, an imposing array of
Easter anthems and a variety of other novelties.
Leo Feist, Inc., have just forwarded to the
trade a circular on the musical comedy "Irene,"
for which they publish the music. A reproduc-
tion of a two column press notice, which re-
cently appeared in- the New York Tribune, is
given a feature position, and gives some idea of
the unusual publicity this musical show is re-
ceiving in the daily papers. According to re-
ports from the sales department of the Feist

MUSICAL NOTATION INDICATOR
WASHINGTON, D. C , February 16.—A musical
notation indicator is the invention of Johanna
Cohn, New York, Patent No. 1,328,718 for which
was recently granted.
This invention relates to musical instructors
and the method of using the same whereby cer-
tain mechanical means are connected with the
keys of a piano or other instrument so that the
pupil may combine with the sound of the note
certain movements or indications by correspond-
ing visual characters. These characters may be
pointers, fingers or similar devices or may con-
sist of printed or painted objects or figures, each
corresponding with a note or sound in order to
associate the two in the mind of the student and
constitute an instantaneous sight reading and
ear training method.
Al Jolson, the well-known singing comedian,
who has been en tour with the musical comedy
success, "Sinbad," was forced to cancel his en-
gagement while playing in Chicago recently. His
part was played by Ernie Hare, his understudy.
Jolson, on doctor's orders, went immediately
to Florida. "Sinbad" will shortly close.
NUMBER BY MEYER
George Meyer, who recently joined the writ-
ing staff of Jerome H. Remick & Co., has given
his first song to that publisher's catalog. It is
entitled "The Hen and the Cow" (Only a Dream
of the Past).
