One Management—Offices in Cleveland
CLEVELAND, O., January 5.—Cleveland became
the center of the paint and varnish trade in
America the first of the year, when the Glidden
Co. announced the consolidation of sixteen con-

in this city. Plants in Canada, California, Texas,
Massachusetts, Missouri and Louisiana are now
in one merger.
Under a new charter, recently granted, the
Glidden Co. will be capitalized at $7,500,000 7 per
cent preferred stock and 360,000 shares of nc
par value common stock. There will be no
bonded indebtedness, according to an announce-

clude the Glidden Co., Cleveland; the Glidden
Co., Ltd., Toronto; the Glidden Co. of Cali-
fornia; the Glidden Co. of Massachusetts, ana

liabilities, including a reserve for Federal, local
and State taxes, amounting to $2,250,000, making
the net value of the properties $13,250,000.
The location of the merger company's plants
gives it an unique strategical point of vantage.
The merger concern also retains a controlling
interest in the Glidden Stores Co. and will con-
tinue its policy of expansion in arranging con-
trol of basic raw materials needed in the manu-
facture of finished products.

for the year ending December 31, 1919, aggre-

During many years the Glidden Co. has had
a large trade with high-grade piano and player-
piano and talking machine manufacturers. The
same is true as regards the automobile indus-
try. Cleveland is fast taking a leading part
in this industry.

know how the circulation in the kiln operates,
how the temperature and the humidity are ob-
tained and how they are controlled. Simplicity
is now considered a quality. The manufacturer
of the present day is also more particular as
to the competence of the man detailed to run
a dry kiln.
The United States Government has run many
experiments and tests at the Forest Service
Laboratories at Madison, Wis., and has proved
that lumber should be treated in a specific way,
both in regard to temperature and humidity.

ance with the latest modern ideas should con-

A great many years ago outdoor drying or

to secure the best quality of lumber, although
attempts were made to hasten this process by
