•Garden," lyrics and music by Cole Porter, a com-
paratively new contributor to the musical comedy
field, but one who has apparently made his mark.
In fact, his work has met the approval of a good
many critics who predict a brilliant future for
the young man.
"Old Fashioned Garden" is having a larger
sale than usual for a production number and as
the publishers, T. B. Harms and Francis, Day &
Hunter are giving it additional publicity, its suc-
cess is beginning to create comment among music
lovers everywhere.

"IRENE" PROVES A SUCCESS
New Musical Comedy Hailed As One of the Hits
of the Season—Harry Tierney and Joe Mc-
Carthy Responsible for Music and Lyrics—
Score Publised by Leo Feist, Inc.
The musical comedy "Irene," which recently
opened in Washington, D. C, was claimed by the
dramatic critics of that city to be one of the
best musical shows in some seasons. The music
especially came in for much commendation.
Harry Tierney is responsible for the music and
Joseph McCarthy is author of the lyrics. The
book is by Jas. Montgomery and the piece has
been produced by the Vanderbilt Producing Co.
Leo Feist, Inc., publish the score.
Below is reproduced some of the clippings from
the Washington papers, following the opening of
the show:
Washington Post—" 'Irene,' which was revealed for the
first time at Poli's Theater last night, was recognized by
an audience that threatened the capacity of the house as
the most delightful light musical entertainment that has
found its way to the stage in many months. It will be just
such a 'failure' as 'The Merry Widow,' 'The Pink Lady,' and
'The Lilac Domino.' The musical interludes provide a wide
variety of solos, duets, concerted numbers by the principals
and ensembles that are sure of popular approval. 'Alice
Blue Gown,' 'Castle of Dreams,' 'We're Getting Away With
It,' 'Irene,' 'Skyrocket' and 'The Last Part of Every Party'
are songs that will never be sung to be forgotten. 'Sky-
rocket' alone, with its wonderful rhythm and lively syncopa-
tions, would be enough to 'put the show over,' unfortified
by a list of hits."
Washington Herald—"Harry Tierney has woven about this
production a real wealth of melody. At least four of them—
'Alice Blue Gown,' 'We're Getting Away With It,' 'Skyrocket'
and 'The Last Part of Every Party'—will probably attain
permanent favor. These four, however, are only high-lights
of a score that bubbles with rhythm and harmony.

"It's difficult to over-praise 'Irene' in the fiice of the tons
of rot that have attracted our weary eye in the last six
months. It has a score that is almost as tuneful as 'She's
a Good Fellow.' It is costumed more gorgeously than 'La La
Lucille,' and it has the same quaint charm that haunted
'Head Cver Heels,' though it's a fine piece of entertainment."
Washington Evening Star-—" 'Irene' is a new musical com-
edy and, in addition to lilting, haunting melodies and snappy
songs and dances, with beautiful women and resplendent
settings, has a most amusing plot. James Montgomery, the
author, and Harry Tierney, the brilliant composer, are to be
congratulated. "The Talk of the Town,' a song and dance,
was encored repeatedly, and 'Alice Blue Gown,' sung by
Miss Day, and 'Skyrocket' are gems in a host of clever musical
numbers."
