CAMPAIGN TO SAVE THE REDWOODS
A Strenuous Effort Is Being Made by Califor-
nians to Preserve the Large Redwood Tract in
the Northern Part of That State
Reports from California indicate that the fa-
mous redwood trees are rapidly becoming ex-
tinct. Efforts are being made to preserve the
few tracts in which the trees still remain. The
redwood, which is botanically known as Sequoia
sempervirens, is of the same family as the more
celebrated big tree, the Sequoia gigantea. The
Save the Redwoods League "*of California has
started a campaign to preserve a large redwood
tract in the northern parf of the State. It em-
braces several hundred acres and is regarded as
worthy of being added to the National Park
system.
Representative Lea of California has introduced
a resolution in the House requesting the Secre-
tary of the Interior to report upon the location,
suitability and cost of procuring a national red-
wood park.
The only groves of redwood permanently as-
sured of preservation are the Muir Woods Na-
tional Park near San Francisco, presented to the
nation a few years ago by former Congressman
William Kern of California, a small California
State forest in Santa Cruz County and a grove of
800 acres purchased a short time ago by the
Bohemian Club of San Francisco for its annual
outdoor recreation picnics.

GROWING SCARCITY OF IVORY
The growing scarcity of ivory will necessitate
several changes in the manufacture of piano keys
in the future, according to W. R. Graul, president
of the Piano Merchants' Association of Ohio, and
in the next three or four years all piano keys will
have to be made of imitation ivory.
"Cost of ivory is so high at present it is running
up the cost of pianos," Graul says. "Destructive
habits of elephants have caused a campaign for
their extermination in Africa, and with the end of
the elephant will come the end of the ivory
supply.
"The shortage affects not only our business,
but also billiard ball manufacturers. Ivory keys
of old pianos are often used on new pianos."
In connection with the supply of Australasian
wool to. u e in American textile mills, the Bureau
of Foreign and Domestic Commerce learns
through the British Embassy that the British
Ministry of Munitions, after consultation with
Australian authorities, finds it evident that detailed
catalogues for the proposed sales on a description
basis could not possibly reach Boston before the
end of November and the wool sold would not
arrive befo.e the end of January. The Ministry
of Munitions, therefore, has arranged to ship
40,000 bales of Australian and 10,00 bales of New
Zealand wools to Boston in October, and ex-
p. esses the hope that the auctions by display may
take place in Boston, early in December.
PRICES HARDEN AT LONDON SALE
FISH LEATHER TANNING IMPROVES
A dispatch from London this week states that
the offerings at the wool auction sales just held
amounted to 9,900 bales. Competition war. strong
and prices hardened. The export demand, in
which Italy participated, was keen. Americans
bought scoured greasy merinos and coarse cross-
breds.

HARDWARE, FELTS & TOOLS
I.xeellent progress in the tanning of fish leather
is to be recorded, and a number of the difficulties
obstructive to the development of the industry
have been overcome by tanners in this field within
recent months.
One company which is tanning fish skins has
established a station in North Carolina and
another in Florida for the capture of sharks and
porpoises, and is meeting with success in its
fishery for sharks. It is understood that the
number of stations will be increased as rapidly
as possible. Another company has recently ac-
quired a site for a tannery in Washington which
plans to tan the hides of sharks, beluga, hair
seals, etc.
Samples of leather recently submitted show
marked improvement in appearance over earlier
samples. The leather is soft and pliable and
appears to have ample strength for many uses.
Arrangements have been perfected for the Bureau
of Standards to make tests of the leather pro-
ducts as to durability, porosity, tensile strength,
pliability, water absorption, wearing qualities, etc.
