NEW PRICE SCHEDULE FOR STEEL
Producers and Industrial Board of U. S. De-
partment of Commerce Issue New Schedule
of Prices on Steel Products for 1919
• WASHINGTON, D. C, March 24.—Representatives
of the steel industry and the Industrial Board
cf the Department of Commerce have prepared
a new schedule of steel prices providing a re-
duction in the present quotations. The new
prices are for the present year, and are effective
at once. The new schedule provides for a re-
duction of from $3 to $5 a ton on various steel
products, basic pig iron being reduced to $25.75
a ton, plates reduced to $2.65 per 100 pounds,
and structural steel $2.45 per 100 pounds. The
price of iron ore f. o. b. Lake Erie ports remains
at the present rate, subject to change in freight
rates. Judge E. H. Gary, chairman of the board
of directors of the United States Steel Corpora-
tion, stated that it was his opinion that prices
during the present year would not go any lower
tl.an the present schedule, and that there was
no intention of reducing wages in the steel in-
dustry. It is expected that the new schedule
oi prices will have a slight effect upon finished
products, although the cost of labor, etc., in the
manufacturing industry is so high at the pres-
ent time that any reductions which may come

will of necessity be small, and cannot be ex-
pected to take place immediately. Production
is rapidly increasing, however, which will be
welcome news to the supply industry.
DISCUSS LUMBER PRICE CUT
Lumber Interests Hope to Arrive at Price
Schedule in the Near Future
WASHINGTON, D. C, March 25.—Following the
agreement of steel producers to cut prices the
Industrial Board of the Department of Com-
merce held conferences to-day with leaders of
the lumber industry.
Chairman George N. Peek was in New York,
but after six hours of discussion it was an-
nounced that, in the absence of any organiza-
tion competent to speak for a majority of the
producers in this country, no agreement had
been reached and sufficient data were not avail-
able on which the board could base any action.
Hope of agreement was held out, however, in
the decision to have a committee remain here
for consultation with the board, which will oc-
cupy much of next week in conference with brick
and cement interests.
PRATT, READ & CO. ENLARGING
DEEP RIVER, CONN., March 24.—Pratt, Read &
Co., manufacturers of piano player actions, have
completed plans for an extensive addition to
their present factory. The addition, which will
be of reinforced concrete, will be completed
within a short time,' as work will commence on
the same immediately.

BOSTON, MASS., March 25.—It became known
to-day that the Government has decided to re-
duce the withdrawal limits placed on its wools
which are now being offered at auction 7]/ 2 per
cent. The reduction, which is to place the
wools here on a parity with the reduced British
issue prices, became effective to-day.
TUNING PEG PATENTED
WASHINGTON, D. C, March 24.—Louis C.
Schermerhorn, Paterson, N. J., was last week
granted Patent No. 1,295,215 for a string anchor-
age for tuning pegs, and the object is to provide
a simple and effective device for facilitating the
connection of a string of a musical instrument
to the peg by means of which the tension of a
string is varied and for securely attaching the
string to its peg.
