USING SONGS IN ADVERTISEMENTS
Schmidt Music Co. Using Titles of Popular
Songs as Keynotes for Series of Well-Written
and Very Timely Advertisements
DAVENPORT, IA., July 15.—The Schmidt Music
Co., with stores in this city and Muscatine, la.,
agent for the Steinway pianos, has been run-
ning a series of original advertisements, using
the title of a popular song as the text around
which the advertisement is written. The ads
appear each Tuesday and Thursday in the daily
papers of this city, always occupying the same
position on the same page, and are attracting
much attention. The purpose and scope of the
ads can be gleaned from the following, which
appeared under'the heading "If He Can Fight
Like He Can Love, Good Night Germany," a
popular song published by Leo Feist, Inc. The
ad read:

"Sooner or later the enemy will find that the
Allies can fight because they love. Their love
for humanity—love of principle—to live and let
live. So in business the great American spirit
must be—to live and let live. It is our business
to join others and help to keep 'America Sing-
ing,' for as Lloyd George has counseled us, 'this
will help win the war.' "
The ad also contained a reference to the sheet
music edition of the "Good Night Germany"
number, and also to the player roll of the same.
Other popular songs are used in the same man-
ner in other ads in the series, the whole form-
ing not only a good advertisement for the sheet
music, player roll and talking machine depart-
ments of the concern, but also impressing on
the American public the need for music in war-
time.
WINS PRIZE FOR BUSINESS INCREASE
BOSTON, MASS., July 13.—C. A. Hewitt, general
manager of the music department of the Jordan
Marsh Co., and Miss Rose Toland, manager of
the sheet music department of that company,
have returned from a trip to New York, which
was made in the interests of their company.
Shortly before leaving for the trip to New York,
accompanied by Mr. Hewitt, it was announced
by the officials of that company that Miss Toland
had won the prize for the biggest increase of
any department.
The increase in the sheet
music department, over which Miss Toland has
charge, was 85 per cent, over the sales figures
for last vear.

SERGEANT EMPEY AS SONG WRITER
Battle Hero Shows Some Exceptional
Along That Line
Gifts
Not content with being a battle hero, motion
picture star, actor and dramatic star, Sergeant
Guy Kmpey is a song writer of no mean ability.
His initial compositions, "Your Lips Are No
Man's Land But Mine," "Our Country's in It
Now, We've Got to Win It Now" and "Lib-
erty Statue Is Looking Right at You," are now
going good.
As the titles suggest, all of Sergeant Guy
Empey's songs are patriotic in style. By spe-
cial contract Jos. W. Stern & Co. are the sole
publishers, and Empey's share of the royalties
are donated to various funds, such as the New
York Sun Smoke Fund, Our Boys in France
Tobacco Fund, American Wounded Soldiers'
Fund and the Red Cross.
A BUNCH OF LIVELY NUMBERS
•The Waterson, Berlin & Snyder song, "They
Were All Out of Step But Jim," is developing
into one of the biggest numbers in the firm's
catalog. Of the newer songs the company is
now featuring it seems to be leading in popular-
ity, with "For the Two of Us" and "When Alex-
ander Takes His Ragtime Band to France"
closely following. In the meantime "Joan of
Arc," "Just a Baby's Prayer at Twilight" and
"Hello, Central, Give Me No Man's Land" are
still among the popular numbers of the year.
NOTED ARTISTS SINGING "SMILES"
Elizabeth Brice, the popular vaudeville come-
dienne, has been making a great hit in Chicago
at the Majestic Theatre singing "Smiles," the
new song recently purchased by Remick & Co.
from Lee S. Roberts. The music of the num-
ber was composed by Mr. Roberts and the words
supplied by Will Callahan. Incidentally, it may
be mentioned that "Smiles" is being used with
great success by a number of other stars.
