screws in the balance rail raise the latter when
they are forced down.
If then the key-bed sags in the middle the
balance rail may still be maintained in the cor-
rect position and the depth of touch preserved.
This is a very valuable feature of the action,
but it is one which should be used understand-
ingly, for untimely meddling will do much harm.
One becomes rather tired of finding grand
pianos with their action thrown out of gear by
ignorant meddling.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Well, men and brethren, you have had your
Christmas dinners and no doubt feel contented
and happy. Will you spare a thought to freed
but pillaged Belgium, to victorious but devas-
tated France, to conquering but almost de-
stroyed Serbia, to the starving peoples in the
Jugo Slav lands, in Russia and in Armenia.
Spare a thought for them and a contribution to
their relief. Then you may the more freely
feel able to wish to your own friends, as I wish

SAVE WAR INDUSTRY BOARD FILES
Plans Under Way for Preserving Valuable In-
dustrial Records Collected by That Board
During the War for Future Reference
WASHINGTON, D. C, December 23.—Outlining
plans of the War Industries Board for the
preservation of its records, data and other in-
formation gathered by the board through its re-
lation with the American war program, Chair-
man Baruch, of the board, declared that the
files probably would be kept intact for at least
six months. . After that time, he said, the files
in all probability would be distributed among
the various Government departments desiring
the data, after a complete copy has been made
for use of business men and others interested in
the information.
Notwithstanding the board passes out of ex-
istence on January 1, every section head of the
board has been instructed by the chairman to
make a complete report on the activities of the
individual sections, embracing how and why
such actions were taken with respect to every
step taken by the divisions. After these re-
ports have been received by the chairman the
reports will be bound, serving as the most com-
plete report of the board's activities during its
existence and also as a history of that branch
of the Government and its work during the war
period.
In commenting upon reports received by the
board concerning the after-the-war industrial
amalgamations, he said that the various chem-
ical companies are forming export associations
similar to that formed by the independent steel
manufacturers for the purpose of competing
American manufactured chemicals in work mar-
kets hitherto dominated by chemicals bearing
foreign trade-marks.
