POPULARITY OF THE HARP GROWS
Instrument With Glorious History Seems to
Have Entered on a New Era of Social Favor
Within recent years the harp has become one
of the social favorites in America, and music
houses in the leading cities throughout the
country report an increasing demand for and
appreciation of this instrument. There is much
connected with the harp to make it a favorite.
For a woman it is an artistic means of accom-
paniment, while its history appeals to the im-
agination of those of a literary or romantic
frame of mind. In the days of long ago each
Irish chieftain kept a bard, or larpe., n h s
castle, whose extemporaneous effus ons on the
harp spurred his lord on to valorous deeds, ur
filled him with dread of retribution, as the oc-
casion required. This influence apparently ex-

houses harpers who were the depositaries of
their best pieces of music."
In 1100 the Welsh had their Musical Canon
regulated by Irish harpers; besides, there are
not wanting grounds for supposing that Cam-
bria owes the harp to Erin. Caradoc (Wynne's
"History of Wales") affirms that the Welsh had
their instruments from the Irish. In Borde's
"Hook of Introduction of Knowledge," 1542, it
is stated that the Welsh harp at that period was
strung, with horse-hair.
"For my harp is made of a good mare's skyn,

"No harpe," wrote Bacon, "hath the sound so
melting and so prolonged as the Irish Harpe."
The Duke of Newcastle frequented, with other
notabilities, about 1730, the house of a certain
Maguire. near Charing Cross, London, who was
exceedingly skillful in his manipulation of the
harp. In 1792 a contest was held at Belfast.
Bunting writes: "The Irish Harpers were suc-
ceeded by a Welshman, whose execution was
very great; the contrast between the sweet,
expressive tone of the Irish instrument and. the
bold, martial ones of the Welsh, had a pleasing
effect as marking the difference of character
between the two nations."

Three years subsequent to Elizabeth's enact-
ment the Rev. John Good, in a "Description of
the Manners and Customs of the Wild Irish,"
wrote: "They love music mightily, and of all
instruments are particularly taken with the harp,
which being strung up with brass wire, and
beaten with crooked nails, is very melodious."
