HOW TO USE UP OLD VARNISH
N. B. Pratt Recently Appointed General Travel-
ing Representative for This Concern
Varnish That Has Thickened Through Exposure
Can Sometimes Be Made Usable
In the case of old varnish of good quality
N. B. Pratt, who has been prominent in the
piano industry for many years, was recently that had become very thick by exposure and also
appointed general traveling representative for rather gummy, a Massachusetts correspondent
of the Painters' Magazine wanted to know how
it could be treated so as to make it workable
and useful. He stated that he had tried to do
it by boiling with linseed oil but with poor suc-
cess. The authority in question furnished the
following reply: 'The success of this depends
upon the degree of saponitication. When the
varnish has lost its volatile thinner and has be-
come stringy and ropy there is no process that
will bring it back to life, without which it is not
safe for use. Linseed oil, at any rate, no mat-
ter how highly heated, will not redissolve the
resiniiied oil and gum. If not too far gone,
turpentine or benzine will take some action on
the residue by heat* but it will not pay for risk
and trouble. When varn.sh has thickened, to a
certain extent, it can be made workable by plac-
ing the container in a hot water bath and heat
up some turpentine or benzine in the same man-
ner and to a like temperature, then mix by
thoroughly stirring."
VARNISH EXPORT FIGURES
During the last three or four years we have
been building up quite an export trade in var-
nishes, paints and other woodfinishing material,
and in connection with it we have developed an
