HARRY VON TILZER'S ANNIVERSARY
Entered Song Writing Field in New York 25
Years Ago—Has Been Most Successful
Harry Von Tilzer, the prominent song writer
and publisher, has just celebrated the twenty-
fifth anniversary of his first efforts into the song
writing game. He came to New York in 1892,
when twenty years old, and after considerable
persistence managed to place one of his songs
with a publisher. His success was rapid, and
he soon developed in the publishing field as a
member of the firm of Shapiro, Bernstein &
Von Tilzer. He is declared to be the originator
of the present system of song plugging. Mr.
Von Tilzer has probably been one of the most
successful and consistent writers of song hits,
and has made several fortunes both as a writer
and a publisher. Much of the money he made
in the music field, however, he lost as a pro-
ducer of theatrical enterprises.
"SO LONG SAMMY^JUST RELEASED
"So Long Sammy" is the title of a new song
with lyrics by Jack Yellen and Benny Davis, and
music by Albert Gumble, now being featured by
the professional department of J. H. Remick &
Co. In the announcement of the new song J. H.
Remick & Co. state "it is not being sung in
the trenches but it is the nation's blessing and
farewell to its brave boys who are going across
the sea."
Robert Teller Sons & Dorner, prominent
music printers at 311-315 West Forty-third
street, New York, have leased the fifth floor at
416 West Thirty-third street to provide storage
room for paper. Will Teller, of the company,
explained that in view of the fact that paper for
music printing was not only very high in price
with probabilities of a further increase, but
was also almost impossible to secure at times,
his house deemed it wise to store all the paper
possible to meet future demands, and had leased
additional space for that purpose.
