PATENTS UPRIGHT PIANO ACTION
New Action Is Claimed to Be as Flexible as
Actions Used in, Grand Pianos
Demands for Gun Stock Material Has Depleted
the Supply of Walnut in This Country
WASHINGTON, D. C, December 10.—Lewis Nel-
son Soper, Guelph, Ont., was last week granted
Patent No. 1,248,192 for an upright piano action.
This invention relates to upright piano ac-
tions, the broad object in view being to render
an upright piano action as flexible and rapid
in operation as the grand piano action.*
A further object of the invention is to pro-
vide means capable of being applied to upright
piano actions already manufactured so that they
may be rendered as rapid in operation as a
grand piano, insuring the light touch of the
standard model action and obtaining the rapid
and positive repeating capability required.
There is in the existing conditions room for
some apprehension about the future of the wal-
nut supply in this country, for conditions have
changed materially since the first scramble for
gun stocks, which brought out more walnut
timber than anybody thought existed. That big
stock of accumulated walnut has been cleaned
down, and now our demands for gun stock ma-
terial are such that mills with orders of this
kind are scouring the country for walnut.
This and the continuing of the popularity of
walnut for furniture makes a demand easily in
excess of the present supply. It is possible that
the present available supply is limited materially
by the shortage of help with which to get out
and market walnut timber.
However, even
back of this there is a feeling of apprehension
of scarcity of timber which makes good walnut
stock take on added value, and raises some ques-
tion about where the furniture trade is going
to obtain its future supply.

ings on the market, cut
