"You Came, You Saw, You Conquered," Prov-
ing a Most Popular Number
With the opening of "The Passing- Show of
1917" at the Winter Garden, New York, Otto
Motzan, the well-known composer, will have
succeeded in closing one of the biggest seasons
in his career, as he contributes much of the
music for that production. This will make the
The great success of the Chappell & Co.
Each season Chas. K. Harris writes a ballad
number: "Keep the Home Fires Burning," that stands out, in its class, as one of the big
which after an enthusiastic reception in Great
numbers of the year. This season, of course,
Britain proved very popular in the United States
proves mi exception to the rule, and although the
some months ago, is again emphasized in the use
of the song at various patriotic events now be-
ing held here. At the patriotic and allied bene-
fit performance held at the Metropolitan Opera
House recently, and at which such stars as
Caruso, Mme. Alda, etc., appeared, "Keep the
Home Fires Burning" was featured by Miss
Sybil Dane. The number was also sung at the
concert of the Woman's Suffrage Party of the
City of New York, held at the Grand Central
Palace, by Miss Litta Brimm. At the same
concert Miss Elsa Aides also sang Ivor No-
vello's other popular song: "Laddie in Khaki."
"Home Fires" also proved one of the favorite
band numbers in the "Wake Up, America,"
parade.
HOLDING PATRIOTIC COMPETITION
The National Arts Club, of Gramercy Park,
New York, is at present conducting a patriotic
competition, which will last until May 21, the
prizes including one of $250 for the best Amer-
ican patriotic poem and $250 for the best
music for an American patriotic song. Now
let the authors and composers go to work.

third Winter Garden production in which he
has had a hand, and when consideration is given
to the fact that many successful numbers have
also been products of his pen this season, it
must be conceded he has had a wonderful year.
His other numbers include the two high-class
ballads, "A Tear, a Kiss, a Smile" and "That's
Why My Heart Is Calling You," the instru-
mental successes "Cutey" and "It's a Pipp'n,"
the latter being his most recent release, and
which is being favorably received everywhere.
From the foregoing it must be admitted Otto
Motzan is coming into his own.
