DECRIES PRESENT-DAY SONG WRITING
Englishman Declares That It Has Degenerated
to a Musical Nothingness and Explains
Song writing, according to a contributor to
the London Times, has degenerated to a musical
nothingness. The present day writers are mere
bands of well-stocked punsters who show won-
derful ingenuity in treating the hackneyed theme
of the Great Lover, the Fair Maiden, and the
Fond Good Night. The Great Lover is done in
mannish style, elaborately convincing; the
Maiden is more or less mawkish sentiment over
which is poured overdone delicacy; while the
Good Night is beatific mush, full of long drawn
out musical sighs, and barber-shop cords.
Most of these compositions lead sluggish lives
on dusty shelves eleven months of the year, he
says, and when occasionally rescued, the fresh
turn that once "distinguished" them is piteously
hors de combat, and is replaced in favor of an-
other whose Good Night twist is perhaps able
to stand a few more grace-note-tears.
"EGYPT" NUMBER A SUCCESS
Reports from the sales division of J. H.
Kemick & Co. state that the song "There's^
F.gypt in Your Dreamy Eyes" is gaining in
popularity at a very rapid rate. It has a title
that immediately attracts attention, and a mel-
ody and lyrics which seem bent tipon making
\t one of the most popular numbers of the
season.

Miss Bour, of Cleveland, Tells of Weird Ex-
perience That Shaped Her Course in Com-
posing—Interesting to Say the Least
CLEVELAND, O., March 19.—Nellie M. Bour, of
this city, who recently wrote a new march,
"Love the Flag," declares that the new number
is the genuine result of an inspiration. Miss
Bour declares that some years ago she had a
dream in which she was present when Abraham
Lincoln was to deliver an address. The audience
filed past to shake hands with Lincoln, but when
she reached the platform and reached for his
hand he drew back and waved an American flag
over her three times. Miss Bour declares that
since having the dream she devoted her efforts
to writing patriotic music.

JEROME KERN GETS PITIFUL PLEA
Rival Composer Fears He Is Cornering the
Production Market
Jerome Kern, who comes close to being the
season's sensation as a composer of musical
comedy music, has led some of his contempo-
raries to wonder if he is trying to monopolize
all the season's productions. In this connec-
tion another composer was moved to write the
following: " 'Oh, Boy,' for the 'Love o' Mike,'
'Have a i^art,' and don't compose any more,
(signed) 'Very Good, Eddie.'"

Desires to Sell His Songs for the Price of Beef-
steak and Potatoes
There is one ambitious song writer, a resi-
dent of Plainfield, N. J., who is desirous of se-
curing- thrpugh his talents something more sub-
stantial than fame. In a letter to Harry Von
Tilzer he said:
"Have written several compositions, some of
which are considered good. In fact, our best
newspaper was glad to print same, and did.
Can write words (without music) to slow,
dreamy waltz, or lively two-step, national hymn
or march. Could you advise me how I might
turn this talent into coal, potatoes, beefsteak,
and the like?"
